PORK CHOP!!!!
I am planning on having several more clutches of leo eggs to be laid soon. I have an old heat mat which doesn't work anymore. The heating elemnt is just dead. It has 3 wires from the dimmer to the heating pad. I will attach pictures. Is there anyway to wire it up so I can plug my heating cable to it? The 3 wire thing isn't ringing a bell to me. The heat cable is just a single cord with plug on the end.

My suggestion would be just to leave it alone if you don't know what it's for or how to do it. Screwing around with electrical stuff when you don't completely know what you're doing is just asking for a fire, and that's not worth saving a few bucks on a new setup.

I am not doing anything until I know 100% sure what I am doing. I have worked with basic wiring a bit but not sure about the 3 wire deal

I am going to stop being hard headed now. I am throwing it away now before I do anything stupid. Now onto finding the rest of the stuffs to make a dimmer. A dimmer dimmer switch thing is all I should need now. Most everything is laying around

Good Luck!

It sounds as though you are planning to make your own incubator.

If you do, be sure that you do not rely on any kind of heat with just a dimmer switch. Without a good thermostat, it is very likely that you will "cook" your eggs. It is just too difficult to control heat without it. Believe me, I tried many years ago with a heat pad and cooked some Burmese python eggs in the first couple of days.

If you have an area that stays mostly in the low or mid 80s F, it is safer to just keep them there (if they are colubrid eggs) than to use an untested incubator. If you do build one, then test it for at least a few weeks before putting any eggs into it.

Good luck!

Still have it?

Hi Kathy, Dave here (web developer dude)..

Did you toss it? I certainly know my way around electrical. Let me know

That was back in 1979, lol! (yes, I really have been doing this for about the last century or so, ha-ha!) Now we have a bunch of Hovabators for pythons or other tropical reptiles, and I just set the corns up on the shelf of the herp room That is usually about the right temp for the eggs.

BTW, I really appreciate the offer of the web help. I am going to take you up on it, but not quite ready to do the new work yet. I have some plans to make a few changes about dry goods, etc, and the web changes will coincide with that.

Thanks!

Hiya ... imagine that...duh...

Anyways, to avoid babbling here on the boards.. I sent a reply in regards to future thoughts/ideas via email.

In shortest terms, we've been at it nearly 10 years... we'll still be here awaiting some fun!

Cheers.... from Rural Canada....
