When, exactly, to feed? And a substrate question.

Ok so we got our hatchling Thursday night. We haven't handled him at all, but I did freak him out a bit a couple times when doing stuff to the viv. I figured we'd feed him today or tomorrow. Should we dig into the substrate and find him, or wait until he is out roaming to scoop him up? Is it better to feed him in the morning or the evening or does it matter?

I think we should wait to feed him until he's out exploring, but that may mean waiting until Thursday for his first meal due to our schedules. :uhoh:

Also, I think I am finding that I am extremely allergic to aspen. Like pure misery can't see or breathe level allergy. If this doesn't fade, is there an alternate substrate we could use? If not, I can just take allergy meds, I have to a lot of the time anyway for seasonal allergies.

I feel like a new human-mommy, worried about doing everything just right.

I usually wait for hatchlings to come out, because they are so hard to find and get so freaked out when you go digging for them, but if that means skipping a meal, I would just go find him. I feed in the evening because that is a more natural time of day.

I think some people keep corns on something called Care Fresh. Better get a second opinion. You could just keep him on paper towels, too, but the love to burrow so much.

You could try using newspaper instead. This has a few advantages, there is no fear your snake will digest anything undigestible. Easy to keep clean. And hopefully your not allergic to it. As for feeding times, if you do decide to change to news paper you could put a pinky in the viv. in the evening and check in the morning. If you decide to stick to aspen your going to have to use a separate feeding container with newspaper.

I would back up both newspaper and CareFresh as good alternatives to aspen. I've never had a problem with either in the past, and CareFresh even comes in pretty colors. ;) As far as feeding, I usually go and find them, since your schedule can't always match 'when they're out.'
