When to update tank

When is the best time to update the tank? I'm currently using a 10g tank and im thinking about getting layla a 20g for christmas. Should i wait for until she is a certain size/age or can i do it and add lots of hides and vines and such? If i do get her a 20g i might just get another corn or get a ball python for myself, i wanna build up my reptile collection :D

Many people will give you different answers I am sure...so take the answer I guess that resonates best within you.

The only thing I think people will agree on is that its a myth that keeping a snake in a cage too small will keep it small, you will just end up with a stressed and unhappy snake in a cage too small for her.

I have heard it said that if the snake, when stretched out, can stretch to one half of the tank, then she needs a bigger cage.

Personally, I like to give my snakes lots of space, and am happy I can do that. I like my snakes to be able to stretch completely horizontally, and not have to curl up or bend cause their cage is too small. Im sure people will say you dont need to give your snakes that much room, but I like it.

I think the general rule of thumb is...
length of tank + width of tank = length of snake

But I'm no math major so I could be wrong!

You answered it for me, thanks. I think i just might get her the 20g tank. She does fit in the 10g but she will HOPEFULLY shed within the next month and grow. I think she'll like the extra room to S T R E T C H
