White Sands National Monument, NM

Outcast

ATPSS
So I was out at WSNM tonight and before the sun went down I figured I would borrow my future mother-in-law's camera and take a stroll. I took a bunch of pictures that didn't make the cut, but here are a few.

1st are some of the NM Sand Dune Lizards. The only reason I know which ones are male and which are female is that I ran upon a couple in coitus, but they disconnected and the male took off, the female is pictured and I found the male later on, that is him going into the hole.
Lizard, not sure if male or female

This one I am pretty sure is Male

This is the Male that was in coitus with the female

Female

To be cont...

Random insects

A couple of plants... one is a Yucca, the other, I have no idea, it just looked interesting.

Finally, a formation in the sand.

Wow, the sand is so white!! The female lizard looks like she's ovulating. She's so round and bulging compared to the male. Nice pics!!

I live in Alamo, but am moving to Cruces at the end of next month/ beginning of August.

I believe the female was ovulating also, Nanci, Her and the male were in coitus when I walked up on them.. I noticed something weird moving in the sand so went to take pictures, but they broke apart before i could get any of them together. This was the first time I have ever seen any of the lizards out there...

Apparently there are supposed to be snakes out there that are also that light color, and I was hoping to see some and take pictures, but I was not lucky enough to come across any of them...

NICE PICS!!! I love White Sands!

As for Las Cruces... my home town is only 40 miles south of you (El Paso, TX). Don't live there now, though. Funny, thinking about Las Cruces reminds me of a girl I used to date there.

Thanks for the complements. I had feared that I lost my photographers eye. I took a photography class in high school and loved it, but I was never able to get a camera... I have a couple of point and shoot camera's but I wish I had one with some lenses to choose from. I would love to get a zoom lens, I had to tread slowly and creep up to those lizards in order to get those pictures... lol, If I really wanted to, I could have just caught them all, but I would rather not pester the protected species too much...lol

Beautiful lizards and very pretty sands. But what are those NASTY looking ants? I HATE ants. Hate them. Would wipe them off the planet if I could--and those guys look particularly nasty!

Yeah. But I love those lizards!

I am not sure what they are called. But I do know that they are the ants that Horned toads use for their main staple... We had a version of them living near my house when I lived in Oklahoma, and while I was in Destin for tech-school for my military job, I saw some of the same type. It wasn't too long ago that they were almost wiped out by fire ants.

I love your pictures. I haven't been to White Sands in 6 years. I really need to toake a trip back. It's so pretty there.

I love White Sands. The last time I went there is was a chilly stormy morning, the sun broke out of the cloud cover and it was just one of the most beautiful sights ever. New Mexico has helped me design so many lands for my fantasy novels. This is such a fascinating state, I only wish I lived up in the mountains.
That plant you didn't id looks like sage. Those lizards are everywhere, I stumbled on one eating a tarantula once. It was some battle, there were spider bits scattered all over the place. Anything that can put down an adversary twice its size gets my respect.
