Why does everyone buy rodents online?

i mena i understand the price is good and all that, Maybe i am just lucky. I dont go through tooo many feeders but i would say i go through about $1000 yearly at the size i am at now. But when i go to shows i just buy my feeders there. i mean even if i bought from rodentpro every 6 months, with shipping the cost is more then i get feeders at shows for. like 35 gram chicks for $.30 , and a lot of people if you keep buying from them will give you good deals, like i just got 1-2 lbs G pigs for $1.75 each and 30-40 gram like large adult mice for $.40. Maybe i am just lucky? It might be somthing some other might want to look into. :shrugs:

So just out of curiosity, where does a 14 year old come up with $1000 a year to buy feeder rodents?

The majority of us buy online because of the numbers we're dealing with. I certainly don't want to be going to the pet store every 4 days to buy pinkies and fuzzies and every 7-10 days to be buying adult mice---even if the prices were good.

Fact is, most local places are extremely expensive with their mice. When I was in FL, the pet store by my apartment sold pinkies-hoppers for $1, and adults for $1.25. That's a no-brainer as far as ordering frozen goes. It's a lot cheaper than buying locally.

And even if you're getting good deals at shows---how often are these shows?

My last RodentPro order came in 3 boxes. If it weren't brumation time it would last around 2 months or so. 'Nuff said.

P.S. Plus it's fun to play with the dry ice and freak my parents dogs out.

It really is not that much, it is less then $100 a month, so if i mow only one lawn a week, that is $25 each week, plus during the summer i work 10 hours days for $7 per hour under the table ;)
The shows that i get these at are monthly

Not everyone has a local show they can get mice at. I have a local provider, and buy from him aswell as rodents online.

I usually raise my own feeders and only have to buy as a supplement when I happen to run out of a specific size (hatchling season uses up all the pinkies I can produce so nothing gets to grow up at that time). And I usually buy when there are specials...like right now, I can buy 1.5 - 2.25 lb guinea pigs (actually ANY size) for $1.00 each, 30-25 grams chicks for $0.25 each (or less if I buy a higher quantity), and 30-50 gram XL adult mice for $0.39 each (although I would prefer to pay a little more for 30-44 gram weaned rats at $0.49 each).

yeah but say you get 30 of those G pigs to one box, then you have to pay like $40 in shipping

Well that's why you order more than one box of stuff. For me, a $350 order and $40 in shipping is no big deal. It's still a heck of a lot cheaper than buying live mice from the pet store, and I only have to make that order a few times a year.

Well i just got a quote for some G pigs( the $!.00 oones) they weight 375-474 grams so aobut one pound. for 30 of them with shipping ( it is 2 full boxes) It is $60 for the G pigs then another $85 in shipping( it is about $40 per box joe). so that is about $2.40 per Gpig

We buy online because of quantity also. We were buying from a local breeder but when we get frozen it's generally 1000+ mice and 400+ rats, they just couldn't supply that amount. It's worth it to me to get everything at one time even if I am paying the high price for shipping, also when you divide the shipping cost by the number of animals I buy it really isn't a big deal.

i buy local
support the lil guys, ya know?

i have no idea how much we pay a head, but average about $40 a week

apartment living really doesn't lend well to buying a second freezer just for rodents of the sizes we need (at the moment: fresh mouse pinks, fuzzy mice, hopper mice, small adult mice, large adult mice, rat pinks, rat pups, and jumbo rats). Not to mention snakes grow fast. 100 pinks wouldn't be eaten. 50 pinks, sure. But by then its time to go up to small hoppers... and one snake will likely be bumped up to small mice before its done with a bag of 100 hoppers...

see what i mean?

basicly you just gotta weight the pros/cons on your own
for me
its just not worth it...

I'm lucky enough to have a show in Cleveland 10 months out of the year where RodentPro has a booth.

During hatchling season, pinkys are as popular as the new PS3. Gotta camp out a few days before the show to be 1st in line.:twohammer

for the chicks with shipping it is about $.40 for 250 of them, and for 250 of those XL adult mice for 250 it is about $.55 each ( both of those boxes were clost to full)

I don't have access to shows, as we only get 2-3 per year in my area. And the ones at the show are still $1 per mouse. I recently did my first online order, and bought 350 mice. It ended up being .49 cents per mouse (including the shipping cost-yay for Big Cheese). The only mice I can find locally are $1.30 per mouse. So buying online in my case, is soooo much more convenient and cheaper!

I'm very lucky that I have a local supplier who can get me any size order I need. It's about $200 every 2-3 months. I can just go out to his place on Sunday and pick 'em up.

I both breed my own and purchase them online (well sort of). I place my order online but they are delivered to a show I vend. I pay a few bucks for the box and dry ice and get the internet price (which is generally less than the show prices).

We used to buy from a local source and we were paying $1.50 a pop for mice, regardless of size, and spending about $50.00 or more a week to feed our snakes back when we only had half of what we have now.

We now raise our own mice and that covers our feeding needs 3 out of 5 meals for all of our snakes. We have trouble keeping adult mice though, because of space issues, and recently ordered some via on-line in a combined order with one or two other local herp keepers near-by and spent only a little over $100 bucks for 350 rats/mice or various sizes - everything we'd need for the next couple of months.

Helps ease the strain on my breeding colonies and allows me to start a couple of new ones while retiring the older mothers without the worry of running short of food for the critters.

I suppose we could buy from a show, but we usually only make it to one or two a year, three if we're lucky and right now with the car troubles we're having we'd be SOL if we needed to drive the 150+ miles to the nearest show just for mice. Suck to live out in BFE with all the creeples.

It's plain and simple for me. Money and Mice.

Too much money to buy locally.

And...they couldn't supply enough mice even if I wanted to buy locally.

i buy my live feeders locally...to feed the ones that i havent gotten switched to f/t or for problem feeders. i spend only $2 or $3 a week on live feeders. and it is a headache to get them...i have to drive across town on delivery day and get there before they are sold out. i'm hoping i can get everyone on f/t soon. one by one they're coming around.
i buy f/t online. it's so much cheaper. and with some online companies i can place a smaller order lets say 100 pinks and 100 fuzzies that fit in my freezer and will feed my snakes for awhile. i dont need to order 1000 feeders. especially since most of my snakes are babies anyhow and have been going up in feeder size. if i were to buy these locally, i would spend over $200. online i spend less than half that with shipping!
