Ditto. The pet store in my town is about the only one for miles around with a reliable supply of mice. Still, they don't produce enough to keep me and everyone else around here going. Not to mention they charge $3.00+ for a mouse of ANY age. I could not have afforded $6,000 in mice this year, and it would have been a huge P.I.T.A. anyway, even if they COULD keep up with my demand. :nope:MohrSnakes said:

Why do I buy mice online? For several reasons:
1. There are no herp shows near me from which to buy mice. The closest one is the Dixie Reptile Show in Birmingham AL--about a 5 hour drive from me. This would most likely require an overnight stay in order to get there early enough to get anything worthwhile. So there is a hotel bill right there. Add in gas, and lost wages from having to take a day off work at time and a half pay, and there is an approximate cost of $250-$300, just to get there and back--not to mention the costs involved in keeping the mice frozen. Add that to the cost of each mouse, and it just isn't worth it. (There is also a show in the New Orleans area, which is also a 5-6 hour drive from me, but it is only once a year.)
2. Since I spend most of the year working 6 days a week, I simply don't have time to drive the 1.5 hours to the nearest pet store each week. Factor in the price of gas, plus lost wages, plus a lost job if I did it regularly to the $3.00 per mouse and the costs are considerably more than what I would pay for online shipping.
3. Even if I bought in bulk (which I doubt I could, since they don't keep that much in stock) from the pet store 1.5 hours away, the price of gas these days would mean I'm spending as much to get there and back as I would pay for online shipping anyway. Add that to the $3.00 per mouse and the costs increase considerably.
4. I have neither the facilities nor the desire to breed my own. I don't think I could kill the little critters anyway, and my son would absolutely freak out if I fed them live.
Therefore, in my situation, it makes more sense for me to buy online.

Where I was, there was only 2 shows a year and there was never f/t mice for sale, only live. I'm fortunate now that I live near a mouse supplier. He has the quantities I need, and I can go over there, pick out the sizes I want and he'll euthanize them for me. I then take them home and freeze them. Very cheap too. The only time I thought about buying online, the mice would have been $13, but the shipping was $65. Wasn't worth it for that.

DANG! I guess i'm lucky in that our local petstore doesn't charge that much for frozen mice and small rats. I pay .79 cents per frozen pink when i buy six or more, and I pay 1.99 per small rat when I buy six or more. For me that's not bad since I only have the 2 snakes, 1 adult and one baby. I checked out online but for the quantity I need for only 2 snakes it wasn't even close to being worth it for me

I breed my own mice however we order our rats from down south - we just recieved 100 rat fluffs and they are the cutest things ever!! I wish they werent dead 
There is no such thing as local shows in the UK - we have a few a year :shrugs:
Pet store prices are insane. £2 for an adult mouse.. thats about $3.75
What I like about ordering online is that they come in big poly boxes which make PERFECT incubators!!

I'm lucky to have an All Animal Expo that is around 2 times a month, at the beginning of the month and at the end of the month, that is just a 20-30 minute drive away from me.
Their show prices are pretty high, but the guy I work with, if I contact him before the show he will set my order aside at his internet prices.
At the beginning of this month I picked up 100 lg pinks, 50 fuzzies, 25 rat fuzzies for $50 That's about .29 per frozen rodent regargless of size.
Works out great for me, I'm thankful to have that show near me. Course its also $5 to get in, I COULD calculate that into the cost, but $5 spent for a few hours of fun browsing and playing witht he animals is well spent.

Well, I order in bulk online. Why? Well, the last 5 shows or so had frozen rodents for about twice what I normally pay online. In other words, I could have ordered 100 pinks and paid the same price WITH shipping as I would have paid at the show. If I would have ordered 300, it would be like getting 100 free from the show.....lol. Shows are convenient for people that only want to buy 50 at a time. I have never seen it economical for people buying more than 200 at a time, though. Maybe at a larger show where a large mouse breeder is local and sells from the show, but they usually mark up their prices for shows.
That's why I do it, anyway!

I raise my own but I cant keep up with the amount of snakes I have so I do order online because there are Never any shows where I am located....... PLUS, where I order from, because I am from wisconsin, there is No shipping costs because I always order more than $100 at a time.

Lucky you. My last shipping charge alone was just over $250 for a single order! It was basically a penny per pound of rodents purchased. Ouch.

Also the price, even with shipping I can get 2 for the same price as the local pet store and I trust the quality/health.
I like having a few months worth of stock on hand as well...if i get hit by a bus the family has one less thing to worry about:shrugs:

I used to purchase rodents by making a monthly trip to the nearest reptile show (1 1/2 hours away). Then, I started to purchase online because the cost, of shipping, wasn't much more than the price, of gas, spent driving to/from the reptile show ... plus, it took the hassle out of having to drive, to the show, if I did not feel like going on a given month.
To top it off, ... after making the trip, there was no guarantee that the rodent co., at the show, would have all you needed either (could run out of a certain size).
Then, I switched suppliers and the supplier that I, now, use does not sell rodents at a nearby show (if any).
Buying, in bulk (online or ordering by phone), is much more convenient, and very much needed, for those, of us, who have larger collections &/or who do not raise their own rodents (which has a cost, of its own, too ).
The cost, of shipping, is not overly expensive.
