Hi guys! Already own two bearded dragons, so I'm not 'entirely' new to the reptile scene. Now for this I have to begin with a story.. when I was a young lad back in Mississippi no older than the ripe age of 5, I was bit by a snake; a poisonous one. I remember the pain of the strike, and the burn of the venom and alas, ever since, I've been terrified of snakes. Odd thing is, I've also always wanted one. (WTF right?) So yesterday I buckled down and bought a Corn from Petco (Yes, I know getting snakes from big chains like that are bad.) and needless to say, it was quite... still, skinny, and a little sickly. Although since he's a baby, I figured he'd grow into it. Wake up this morning to find him dead.
Brought him back to petco, got a refund, then checked petsmart to ask about their snakes (only big chains near me T_T). Guy gives me like 5 things of paperwork on a snake, his feedings, his sheddings, etc, almost everything as detailed as how big his poo was; all since he was born. Then he hands me the snake.
A beautiful albino corn. (Pictures to come as soon as he comes out of the corner hiding. lol)
Guy gave me the snake for cheaper since Petco was so unhelpful; some pinkies, and a new bulb.


Now when I get more money, I plan on getting Harold (snake) some aspen bedding and possibly better clips for the lid and such, but I have some questions...

His next feed day is Saturday, but since he's in a new place should I try feeding him one early? (today or tomorrow)
And how long should I let him chill in the tank before attempting to hold him?
Any other tips I should have?
 
Saturday will be fine to try to feed him, though you might even wait until a week has passed, that's the most adviced period. After that feeding, wait for 48 hours before handling him. No handling before the feeding is the best you can do, he can really get used to his new home than.

Bad to hear about the first snakey dying, I hope Harold will be with you for many, many years!

This is what I got for now. So basically just wait til Saturday, let him eat, then leave him alone again for 48 hours, THEN hold him? (Still trying to get used to holding a snake, so just wanting to know when I can hold him. lol)
 
Also, how hard can they push on a lid? I have to clamps on the lid, but if you push up with enough force you can still lift the corners....
 
Don't you have anything like a rubber band or such? Or any type of transport straps that can be pulled until they are snug?

That's what I got. Showing the clips (one on either end) as well as showing that if you push hard enough on the corners, it does open a little. Questions is...can they push that hard.
 
I can't see how hard you are pushing.... if it really needs some effort You might be fine but you'd better check if that goes along the sides all around... your snake won't be pushing in corners only.
 
It's a semi-rough push all the way around..hoping it will be okay. lol So when should I be able to try holding the guy?
 
Two days after his first diner (and of course to take him out to get his diner). But if you see him out and about before that, it won't hurt to do a short handling session, unless he seems way stressed out if you reach in to get him. As long as you don't grab him from his hide or chase him, that is not a great idea, especially since he is new in da house and small.
 
Welcome and what a handsome snake! We've just had ours since December 17, so I can't offer much advice except we tried to refrain from holding ours for 5 days. The first session we handled them was short.
We left them alone for 48 hours after their first feed.
Good luck and hope you can get him some aspen soon! Mine loves to tunnel in it.
I'm new to cornsnakes, but I understand they are good at escaping!
 
Well so far he spent about an hour going around the care and rim of the lid. He also did a window dance similar to that of a beardie so I thought maybe he wanted out. After trying to pick him up, the minute I'd make contact he'd silther away quickly. So nil to that idea. Lol now he's sleeping in his tree again. I'm so terrified one day I'll find him not in the cage, wife would kill me. Lol
 
My baby creamsicle loves to snuggle up on the rim of the tank, right underneath the lid. He's not necessarily trying to escape, he just likes to stretch out up there, so I got a new lid for my tank with two clips to enduse he can't get out!
 
my corn used to stay snuggled up on top of her tree constantly, since the day i bought her. she was so scared wouldn't even come down for a pinkie unless no one was in the room. that lasted a whole month. it was the worst thing ever. now though she is always down and loves being held and even tolerates a bath.
 
Hmm. Now the question arises of NAMES! Harold wasn't working for a name so now I need to think of something for a Orangeish albino corn snake...hmm....
 
Naming him is the fun part! We named our orange creamsicle, "Zeus," nothing to do with orange but that's kind of hard!

His termperary name seems to be Dobby due to my wife starting to read Harry Potter. Tried to pick him up a couple times when he's roaming around the Viv, but he generally gets scared and twitches the moment I make contact. Once or twice I"ve managed to have him not move TOO much and be able to actually hold his lower half and watch him try to get back into the Viv (or on top.) but still get a little scardycat when he puts his head twords me. Keep thinking he's gonna bite. lol
 
Ooh, I like that name! The only "orange" names I could think of other than the obvious Pumpkin (sounds like a cat) were Crush (as in Orange Crush) and Fanta!
 
So he lets me hold him now, and honestly, I'm hardly afraid of him biting me. I put him in a smaller cage (a cricket holder I got that had been cleaned) and put a pinky in with him. Instead of striking and constricting it, he just... slithered on over to it, opened his mouth, and started swallowing it. He's lazy I guess. lol He finished the first quite quickly and reading the feeding chart the store gave me, said he didn't want to eat last time so I figured Id give him a second. Possibly a third if he still looks around for food. If I thaw a third, and he doesn't eat it, can I re-freeze it for next time?

Also, is feeding in a second enclosure better or worse? I hear both sides.. like "don't feed in their home because they'll then incorporate you reaching in as feeding time." But that also works the other way around... so what do you all do?
