Why I like to use egg laying containers with CLEAR lids...

Yep makes sense why you would.

Now for my question...It looks like you pack the boxes REALLY full of the peat moss. Do you really pack it in like that or do they pack it when they go in to lay their eggs?

Seems like if you packed it in, they wouldn't have room for themselves, much less the eggs.

Just curious.

I have found that the females prefer having the peat moss packed in tightly. They feel much more secure, apparently, when they can burrow in and make their own little nesting area. When you have it too loose, they will prowl around for a long time looking for a better place to lay the eggs. I think the females are looking for a place safe from predators too, so it would make sense they wouldn't want to lay them in a place that would be too easy for a predator to find them.

Yeah I definitely understand why you have the clear lids~~LOL

I think that I should do that too...at least for the hatchlings so that I can see them when they come out.

I agree with the point that you stated that they need to feel secure in order to lay

hmmm...very strange - I also use containers like these with an similar tightly packed peat moss but mine never layed them on top.
they allways lay them at the bottom of the container so that I must look under the container to see if thay have allready finished laying.

Pewter

I have the same thing happen. I also use moistened Peat moss and fill the containers snuggly for them and they LOVE it but always seem to bury themselves in it and lay under the soil. Then I have to move it aside to see if they have laid yet.
Don't know how you get yours to lay them so nicely on top for you Rich. Gotta give mine some leasons on putting them where I can easily see them.

I've had most of my snakes for a long time, so I guess they are used to the drill. The females generally will dive right into the egg laying box when I put it in their cage, barely waiting for me to set it down.

Some will burrow into the center of the peat moss, but few will ever go to the bottom. That's why I use shallow containers. The bottom two thirds of it was always wasted space.
