Why is shipping so $$$$???

I just shipped a corn snake from California to Colorado about two weeks ago.
2lb FedEx priority overnight.
Shipping cost by itself was $52 plus change. That does not include the new box, foam packing, and heat pack (still cold in Colorado).

That's why shipping is so expensive.

It is ironic that legless lizards are fine, but snakes aren't.

I got a package from USPS a couple months ago that had silkworms in it. It had a green 8x11 paper taped to it that said something like "Handle With Care! Live Animals!" and listed my Alachua PO. It had little drawings of various animals on it- a turtle, a bird and, ironically, a snake...

(No other silkworm shipment from USPS has ever had that sheet on it).

Thanks everyone for your replies. I had forgotten that USPS had rules against snakes. Technically spider fall in that same category, but we still get away with shipping spiders through USPS.

I live about an hour from the nearest herp expo, so between gas and admission, I'm probably better off just paying for shipping and saving myself the time for the trip.
