Wierd lines that look like fins...?

His little feeding container is the little cardboard box I got him from the store in cause they said that's what they use for feeding and I've tried putting him in that in the tank with the mouse but he likes it dangled. And so the last two times he's crawled up onto his rock (a water fountain) and waited for us to try and feed him and that's where he eats so it's not getting any substrate on the mouse. I just wanted to make sure that i'm not the only wierdo feeding their critter in the tank.

I recently started keeping mine just on newspaper or paper towels (depending on what I have on hand) and am now just feeding them in their homes. They do not strike me thinking Oh look food! But I would not do it in a viv with substrate like aspen, just too scary for me to think of. Do try to get a pic of your baby though, we love photos.

As i mentioned i was concerned at first but he eats on his water fountain and i keep a close watch till the mouse is all in his mouth. He's the black one on top of the tree...I call him Kaa. The orange one...Rocky passed away earlier this week.

Sorry I was just saying why I don't feed in vivs with aspen, did not mean you shouldn't. Looks like the one that passed away was an amel, the one up top looks more like a normal than an anery but it could be my screen. I'm sorry the one died but at least now the other can relax, co-habbing is rather stressful on the little guys.

nwheather told me she thinks he's a normal. I found pics of her hatchlings on another site trying to find one that looked like Kaa and they were pretty much identical to him. I think they were titled top shelf miami....or something like that. He's black and grey and right after shed the spots on his back look like a velvety red color outlined with black. Currently it looks like some of the grey on him has orange in it too now and the red spots are looking more mahoghany in color. And now he's looking a lil irridesent so I think he's gonna shed again....he's gorgeous after shed.

That means he's not a Miami. Miami's are usually all grey on the ground color, sometimes tannish.
It can be harder to tell when they're little. You should start to see more orange-ish color develop in the ground color.
Miami's often look like they have almost a white ground color when they're little.

Here's some pics...the first one is a normal, the other two are Miami's, one is a hatchling, the other is an adult.
If you look at ian's vivarium, & scroll down on the normal/classic (carolina) pictures, you can see how some end up with more orange than others.

Sorry to hear about the other one dying.

nwheather he most definitely looks EXACTLY like the one on the top left right now! Gorgeous little creature. Thank you for the condolences...it's a sad affair. He was the cuddly one :-(

And once again thank you nwheather for the wonderful info! The orange didn't appear in him till just recently in fact I just noticed it today! Thanks for the link to ian's pics he's not quite that orange yet...just on his head and a few spots in the grey down his back. And I so hope the red outlined by the black doesn't completely go away, that's my favorite part of his coloring!

No problem :)
The outline on the normals generally stays, for the most part.
Be sure to take lots of pics as your baby grows up!

Oh I will! I'm kinda waiting on a new camera to get some real good pics and kinda waiting on him to shed again...I think it may be soon since his colors are not as vibrant as they were. And can't wait to show of his viv, he has a mansion lol

Just FYI, June 12th is the next PNWHS meeting, & they're going to have someone there who will be showing how to sex snakes of all ages. You can even bring your snake & have them sex it for you.
The main intention is to teach others how to do it.

Here's the main page. I just saw that Dr Maas will be there as a speaker. He's one of the best herp vets in the area!

Thanks! Although seattle is a bit far for me to plan on such short notice. Hey Kaa ate on wed and has appeared to have digested completely...should I try to feed him again this week since due to my knowlege he's only eaten 2x in the last several months...?

He's a baby, so you can offer him food every 5 or 6 days.
Do you have any NutriBAC on hand? It would be a good idea to get some, if you don't already have some.

Not sure what that is but I have Repta-Aid from trying to nurse the other into health again....says it provides energy and fluid support for malnourished and dehydrated reptiles and amphibians.
I just posted a pic of his 'mansion' and a couple new pics of him being active in it that I just took in the husbandry/basic care forum in hopes that ppl may have imput on his viv although i think he loves it.

Oh and I have water conditioner that I put in his water since we have city water and it has chloromine in it

The raised lines(like fins) on the body you mention are tiny loose folds of skin from it being totally emaciated. They probably never ate most of their lives, and especially at the freakin Petco!.
Most pet stores like that don't give too craps if their snakes die or not. And most of the employeees that work at those places know next to nothing about proper snake husbandry either, so it's a horrible combination to be honest. The snakes are there strictly to be SOLD, not cared for at all.

It's a sad fact............but a fact nonetheless.

I feel bad for lots of neglected animals in pet stores, and I know it is sometimes human nature to want to take animals in that don't seem to have a very good life in these stores. But my advice is to never buy a snake that has loose folds(ridges) along the sides of it's body, because that means something is very wrong.......either because of the store, or it is doing poorly anyway. I see so many poor looking snakes and lizards in pet stores it is absolutely ridiculous!. And if snakes and lizards had fluffy fur and big brown eyes instead of scales, these stores would be out on their ear before you could count to ten. But most of the general public doesn't view reptiles like they would more common warm-blooded pet animals. :shrugs:
