hello everyone,

i have a female corn that im pretty sure is going to lay soon,so i added a nest box full of vermiculite to her cage. everyone says its the stuff to use for laying/hatching eggs. anywho this is the small grain (could not find large grain) and there are metalic looking pieces of vermiculite that stick to my hands, and the snake even getting in her eyes and under her scales.it is also hard to get it off, unless washed. is this vermiculite harmful to my snake? if so what should i give her to burrow/lay her eggs in? maybe moss or perilite ive heard works too.any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance,
caylie

I don't believe it's harmful, but I bet it's uncomfortable getting under the scales and in the eyes.

I use moss for the laying box. I use vermiculite with moss on the top to incubate the eggs.

This is just a suggestion,

but why not go to your local garden nursery and pick up a bag of Long Fibered Sphagnum Moss? I do not mean Peat Moss! I personally think that LFS Moss is the best stuff for a laying box, and for hatching the eggs as well. Just get it good and wet and then squeeze out the water like you would a sponge. Fill your laying box full with the moss; the snakes like to wiggle their way into the moss, creating a sort of 'nesting den.'

Do you know any online suppliers that I can get that stuff in BIG bags? I can only find small bags around here. By the time I use it for the snakes and gardening projects I have spent more then I would like:)

Sphagnum Moss

I ordered a 5 kilo bale from Vanishing Jewels out of both Texas and Florida. It is extremely clean stuff and thick strands. A light tan as opposed to dark brown (dirty) I've gotten from the local nurseries.

Here's their website:

I worked through Patricia, and here's her number:

It's really great stuff.

I don't know what everyone else pays for their moss, but I get mine at Home Depot for $3.98 plus tax for a 1/4 bushel bag. I can fill about 3 1/2 nest boxes per bag, and then recycle the moss into my garden after the eggs hatch, shells and all (I consider the "egg goo" and shells added fertilizer, and my plants seem to love it).

I don't know of an on-line bulk supplier, but a quick search on Dogpile may come up with one. I'll try that after I leave here and come back with any answers.

A quick search came up with a supplier...

www.carlinsales.com

Long fiber moss 432 cu in 12/cs for $27.08/case

Use the Search and enter "moss"

Go to "Moss" (NOT "Long fiber moss" - that only gives a description) The large bag is ID # 75-40 Dist. by Mosser.

I didn't look up the shipping costs or anything.

Thanks all. I will check it out.

Our Home Depots never have any Long Fiber Moss just Peat. I found it at Lowes but it's almost $5.00 for a small bag. I bought all they had on the shelf but it almost killed me to pay that price:eek:
