Hi Viktoria.
I would think that if your going to move the fish that you should also move the snakes. When you say your going to de-flea the house, I'm assuming you mean useing (bombs here) gases/flumes or something like that.
If you or your fish aren't going to be in the house while this is going on , move the snakes too!.
Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply!I'll be using the aerosol variety that you get from the vets.A friend of mine had her house fumigated and lost her fish and her budgie but that was done by a so called professional company and she got reimbursed.I plan to do this myself and as any animals of mine are "downstairs" only then do I have to de-flea downstairs. When I have done this in the past I have only covered my fish,as most of the time I leave the lids off my tank for natural daylight.I did wonder as I could block the vent on the viv if that would be better than moving them. Also, have heard "mites" being mentioned on the forum. My water dragon never suffered from any insects in his viv{other than the crickets and locusts!}Whatare these ghastly creatures, what should I be looking for and if this happens then should I use the flea control spray then clean the viv thoroughly?Cheers!

Read the label on the can that you set off and if it has a pyreth-.......... (some word) as one of the actives, it will only harm your fish if they are uncovered. If you don't want to move the fish just cover them with suran wrap and turn off the filter. Your tank should have enough oxygen for 8hrs. As for the herps, any pyrethroid based pesticide will take them out in a flash. It attcks cold-blooded creatures faster than any other form. The good thing about pyrethroids is they have a very short half-life and only remaine actice for approx 20 mins on a sunny day. I would still wait the recommended time on the can. Be sure to remove all animals. For best flea control be sure to open all interior doors, closets, rooms, etc. They are very safe if used properly.

This is not true. I was told the same thing a while back, and I lost ALL of my fish. The tank was well sealed so I can only assume that they did not have enough oxygen after all.

Thank you!

Thanx for the info.I usually move uncovered tanks,I only breed guppies to get colour morphs, just like most of you guys do with the corns. That comes next for me,I plan to build a fish and reptile house in my garden, then I can pursue my hobbies without getting on my partners nerves!I can also rescue any reps that I feel I can cope with.Since joining here I have read a wealth of information and can only thank you peeps enough for helping me.The last thing I want to do is a "Hitler"on my snakes.Am very sorry if my term of phrase offended anyone..Thanx again!

We got some treatment for fleas from our Vet here. Call "Advantage" (brand name). It's a liquid in a small tube that you apply between shoulder blades on the dog. Treatment amount goes by dog weight. Work on cats too. If I'm thinking right here it kills the flea that bite the animal. Now we found it at pet stores too. It's a monthly application. Ask your Vet about it.

Good Luck to you

I have used it on the cat.It kills worms too.Am taking it that you are on the same side of the continent as me!The only problem I find is that while the animal/s are treated, the house becomes a flea pit! This I can't have as got a 4 month baby and 18 month baby. What I thought was a heat rash of some sort has turned out to be flea bites.Yuk!My dogs and cat are routinely treated but I guess I got a bit sloppy this month as we got the hatchlings and my time been taken up finding what I can about them, hence all the annoying questions! :-offtopic

We had a bad flea problem for several months.

I started treating the cats with Advantage (used Frontline Plus on one month) and then had a professional pest control treatment done where they use a growth regulator indoors and some pyretherin on the patio. We only turned off the filter on the fish and didn't worry about the few herps indoors. (Most are in another building). The growth regulators only work on inverts, and don't kill adults. They just stop babies from going to the next stage. In the US, I think you can buy the growth regulators in feed stores.

I haven't seen a flea in at least a couple of months, so I hope the problem is gone.

Another vote for Advantage

My dogs are always on Advantage all summer long. I never have problems with fleas, and it never bothered the snakes or fish. I have planted Amano tanks, and a reef tank with delicate inverts that would be affected long before it became a problem for the vertebrates....

I agree with corncrazy. it would be safer to remove the fish than take the risk. There are alot of variables that go into wheter or not a covered tank can support the living inhabitants.. For one you would have to make sure that you did not exceed the amount of fish per gallon in the tank. The water would have to be good quality with no waste floating around or ammonia, or nitrate waiting to be broke down thru the biological process. A 20 gallon tank with good water quality and a 1/2 inch of fish per gallon of water would probably be fine. Of course you still have to consider PH, and the type of fish.

As for the fleas we use to treat the house with sevin dust but we had all hardwood floors.

We got fleas too!

Your post came for me at the perfect time. I have 2 cats and a pitbull and all are treated during the summer months for fleas, but low and behold I got the crap bit out of me last night and both my daughter and my boyfriend found them on their bodies today. Just to be safe I will definately be removing my snakes from the house while I bomb. The chance of them being a little stressed by moving thier vivs for a couple of hours is far better than the little guys getting messed up by the chemicals. Good luck with your flea prob!

Thank you!

Thanks everyone for replying!I got the dogs and cat de-flead,as such, just need another treatment as I've just found out I have rescued yet another shepherd with a flea allergy..So now I really have to keep on top of this.I've got another appointment with the vet and will get some staykill to sort the house out.My tanks are fine, the fish are happy and healthy,I started breeding angels and blue acara, keyholes and golden severum for my local aquarium store about five years ago so guppies is a breeze compared to cichlids!Instant 150 fish!I rehome what I don't want,I only keep the decent colours to breed maybe my own new strain, which is definately what I'm going to do with corns once I have my reptile house built - I won't have to worry about jumping blood sucking invaders either! Thanks again for your time!!!Cheers!V :-offtopic :grin01:
