With regard to unexpected clutches

I have a snow female who weighs in at about 187 grams. I have no intention of breeding her at this point, and she's not co-habbing with anyone, but I've read some reports of young females producing slugs.

My question is, at what age (size) should I start providing a laying box in case of emergencies? I wouldn't want her to need a lay box and not have one.

Thanks.

I would watch her next season. This season is almost done. Watch for unexpected refusal of food- that's the major sign.

Except my female that just surprised me with a double clutch ate only 3 days before laying... and that was her second meal in a week cuz I thought the restlessness was because she was hungry. As I just said in another post...someone really needs to get these snakes to read the books so they'll do what they are "supposed" to do. Basically, be prepared for surprises.

My girl was quite active. Very restless. Basically frantic. Looking for a suitable place to lay those eggs and stupid me hadn't clued in that she was double clutching and hadn't provided one.

One other thing to look out for are some subtle but you can learn to recognize them (I get the impression it is actually rather obvious to the really experienced corn breeders) changes in body shape. The spine will get a little prominent, and the belly will become more rounded. I found a good explanation & pics here:

I agree, if your snake is going nuts all over the viv I would get a lay box in there immediately. I had the same thing happen only I had no idea what was going on, both my girls were crazy ladies. When Scarlett laid 8 slugs in the middle of the tank I slapped myself on the forehead and hurried up to get a box for Snow. She went in immediately, came out 2 days later and died, with half of her tail still in the box. She had laid 12 slugs the size of marbles which is why I couldn't feel them, and she was as mean as she could be. I wish I had know beforehand, but I didn't expect it since she was 13 and had never been bred.

I have a 11 month old snake that was with a siblings two females and one male. She started to look very large in the bake end so i was starting to worry but she was acting normal and eating fine. Then today she laid slugs i did not know they could do that before a year i just got an other cage for the girls as the boy could be in the one they are in right now. She is fine and just ate two fuzzies again after she laid yesterday and last night.
I have now separated him but i did not know they could lay so young.....

Wow. I wouldn't have thought an 11 month old snake would lay, either. Not surprised they were slugs from one so young. And it's probably a good thing they were slugs as I've read that takes less out of them.

How big is she? And how sure are you of her age?

So I did hatch her last year so I know her exact hatch date. Her weight is 80g. I really thought she was going to be okay but I will have to be more careful from now on as i do keep the babies that I hatch together for the first year. Then separate the boys and girls from the litter. She is very pretty I can send some pic. I know she is a ghost but she has some very pretty colouring. She is very pink and grey and blue and she look almost transparent went looking at her in a window.

Wow! She does sound pretty. Please post a pic. We love pics around here!

80g is soo tiny to be laying eggs. I hope she recovers ok.

I don't know for sure if having the male in with her affected things, since the eggs weren't fertile anyway. Sometimes females will lay a clutch of slugs when they haven't been with a male, but I've never heard of that happening in a corn so young or so small. Still, whether the male influenced it or not, I think it is better not to cohab and that is only one of the reasons.

Wow. That is young! I am glad they came out okay, I think there was something this year that made most corns display behaviors that are unusual. Perhaps the extreme weather all over the country this winter and spring, who knows.

I plan on having lay boxes prepared for all my ladies (hopefully more than one lady by that time!) when the time comes around next spring, since I don't breed and am a newbie I never expected my two girls to be gravid this year.
