Hello all, Ive been reading around this site for the past week probably. Hitting all the FAQs and checking out topics that related to me or I found interesting. I have (I think it was refered to as) a black albino corn. His name is Nibbs and I think he is around 2-3 months old. I have a few quick questions.

Im thinking about moving up to fuzzies, but Im doubtful that he will be able to take it. I fed him 2 pinkies last time which he had digested within 24 hours. The pinkies already seem real big in comparison to his mouth. But he just eats and eats! He also seems to stay on the cold side of his cage, will this be bad? I would assume not as he can choose which side of the cage to go to. And lastly, I bought him at pet shop, should they have records of his birth?

alrite!first welcome to the site!hmm well it depends, see its not the mouth size that matters it is the thickest part of the body.if it looks like the pinkeys are about the same size if not bigger then its probably best to play it safe and stick with the pinkys.it doesnt really matter about what side of the vivarium the snake chooses, mine tends to prefer the cooler side also.about the pet shop?i hopnestly dont know.but i would guess so?hope that helps

the correct term is Anerythristic not black albino if he is eating two pinkies with out any trouble the you could most likely move him up to fuzzies...the size of his head has nothing to with the size of prey the snake can handle...you go bu the thickest part of his body and find a prey item thats around the same size as the thickest part of his body. Staying on the cold side won't harm him i have a snake thats almost consistently on the cold side of her tub but shes perfectly fine..so just let him be where he wants. And a if you bought him from a pet shop like petco, petsmart, etc. etc. they most likely wont know anything about the snakes history only thing they'll probably know is when the snake ate last and maybe when it shed last

On the petshop front, i dont really know about the UK but they wont have records unless someone who works there hatched out the snakes, either that or they know the breeder well, or the breeder gave them records. My corn was from a petshop but i was told they were hatched by the guy in the petshop the guy i was speaking to, and he told me the birth date, and gave me feeding/shedding records.

I've never heard of anything being referred to as a black albino corn. Do you mean albino?, or anery? the first is usually white, while the latter is typically greyish with darker grey/black saddles.

On the feeding dont judge the size of the mouse given by looking at your corns head. Look for the fattest part on the body of your corn, that is a prey item can be 1 to 1 and a half times the size of the thickest part of your snake (2/3's of the way down). Don't worry about the snake going to the cold side of the tank after eating, as long as you have hides on both sides of the tank and you temps are ok then let your your snakey be the judge of what temps he needs. What are your temps (just in case)?

Anerythristic (black albino) are the compliment to amelanism. The inherited recessive mutation of lacking erythrin (red, yellow, and orange) pigments produce a snake that is mostly black and gray. When mature, many type A anerythristic corn snakes develop yellow on their neck regions. In 1984 a wild caught Type B anerythristic corn snake was caught which is the ancestor of anerythristics missing the yellow neck regions. Similar snakes include: stonewashed -- copper or light brown blotches; charcoal (aka muted anerythristic, Pine Island anerythristic)-- type B anerythristic, very low contrast with shaded of gray on white and black background. - Wikipedia :)

My temps are fairly low I think. The highest it gets during the day is around 85, and at night 77 or so. Im using a heat lamp during the day, and a night time heat lamp at night (which doesnt do much). Ive been reading around about the mat/light ideas and been thinking about adding a mat.

Cant edit posts here? Well I forgot to add that those temps are on the hot side at the substrate (which is the snake astro turf stuff).
