WORRIED SICK: Female with swollen cloaca region

I'm new here. I'm hoping someone can give me some advice.

My 4 year old, albino corn, Pearl, laid 12 eggs about 3 weeks ago. She had NOT been mated, since spring of 2008, so obviously the eggs were infertile.

She shed about 5 days later and ate her usual adult mouse last Friday. Last night, I noticed the area above the vent was swollen. It looks like it might be eggs that will not pass. She seems to be defecating only minimally. However, she seems her usual self; she is not acting ill.

I was unable to get a vet appointment for her today, but will take her to one tomorrow. I was told a variety of things by vets and technicians I spoke to over the phone today: she might die tonight since this condition is so serious, she might need surgery, which she may not survive--if it even is an egg bound problem--could be something else. But it seems to me, given the recent laying, it probably is eggs.

I was told to soak her in warm water tonight and also put KY jelly on her vent region.

I'm new to this forum. Any other ideas what this condition might be or any advice to take care of her tonight, till she can see the reptile vet? Thanks.

I hope someone with more experience come by but you could also change the bedding to paper towels until the conditions get better.

If it were me, I would run water in the tub, use a thermomiter so the water is between 80-84 degrees....and let her swim for about a half hour.

Plus instead of surgery, see if the vet can use a needle to suck out the eggs contents so the egg collapses and passes. Much safer, I think....

There you go!!
Thanks Beth.

Serpentine,

I see this is your first post.. Welcome to the forum.

I hope everything works out for you.

Good News!

First, thank you to those of you who responded to my post with your advice.

I got my girl, Pearl, to the vet yesterday morning. He was very concerned, not knowing if it was an egg or an infection causing the swelling. He said Pearl might need surgery. He would know after he X-rayed her. He sent me home to wait and worry.

The vet called several hours later with great news. It was an egg, which he was able to work out, whole, with patience and some KY jelly. The egg was HUGE. Maybe that's why she couldn't pass it herself.

Anyway, the vet said she should be just fine now. I'm very happy as you can imagine! :D
