So today I went to the petstore and got some new bedding and a light timer. I had been using cypress chips I think but this time I got Aspen shavings.

Before today my snake never did anything...ever.

I put him in his viv after cleaning it and putting the aspen shavings in and he had a HUGE change in behavior. He is moving around looking at everything. He is curious about everything and his mode has gotten a lot better!

You have just changed his whole world around, of course he is curious ;)

He will settle and go back to normal after the initial exploration period.

Ya, but at least his mood is better. He used to be real snappy but now after 6 hours he is still in a good mood and is at least out from under his water bowl

Is he just a baby? If so, they can be rather snappy and wriggly until they grow out of it.

Another environmental issue that can irritate a corn is their temperature. How do you heat your wee ones cage? How do you control the heatsource and how do you measure the temperature? Low temperatures can cause lethargy, high temperatures can cause burns (depending on just how hot the source is) aggression, irritation, regurgitation etc.

Yes hes about 2 months old I think. I keep his temp around 80 degrees on the warm end with an adjustable heating pad and a basking light. I have a thermometer in his viv

Are your heat sources controlled by a thermostat? If not theres a high chance your wee one may overheat. Do you use a digital thermometer with probe to measure the temperatures at the hottest part of the heat source? If not, you won't have an accurate reading.

No I dont have a thermostat for the heat sources. Where would I get one? Im using this thermometer that came in a pack with my Viv. Where would I get a digital one?

I buy most of my reptile equiptment on ebay. I am sure most good reptile stores would have thermostats and digital thermometers in stock.

petco has a relatively cheap digital thermometer with a probe. If you don't see it in the reptile section look in the aquatics section. The reptile one is exactly the same but has different packaging and colored plastic.

you can get digital thermometers with probes at stores like Walmart too, they are called indoor/outdoor thermometers. The idea is you put the digital display inside, and put the probe outside. Works great, though the wire for the probe is longer than you'd need.

I don't use a thermostat, I got a table-top lamp dimmer at home depo, and pluged it into my heat pad. I adjust the temps manually, though I rarely have to do it. Mostly just when the seasons change.

Just to show you what they look like, you can pick them up at home depo/walmart or whatever.
