Yay! I can get one.

So how long would food last in the freezer? I want to order alot so I don't have to order them often, but not so much that it gets old and/or freaks my mom out.

Is a heat cord like heat tape? Yeah my rheostat fluctuates a little too much for my worried new mommy brain to handle. lmao

I would suggest for now just getting the basic package that is offered. With the mouse factory I would go ahead and buy 50 sml pinks. This gives you plunty for several months but not so much that you will be left with a ton of left over when your snake moves to the next size. and they dont take up that much room. there is no way to say exactly how long they will last as it is due to how you store them but you should be able to use them up before they go bad I have fuzzies right now that i would say have lastes 4 maybe 5 months and they are still good, they are also still vacum packed. when they start getting frost bite really bad then they lose their nutriant value. but they can last a long time if you put them in a good freezer container.

I looked on that mouse factory website, and it's $15 for 50 pinkies, but $29 for shipping! Is that normal? Why is it so expensive?

I would order from big cheese rodent factory myself, that's where I ordered from and it was great quality. It is usually about that much for shipping, because they ship them in dry ice, which makes it very heavy. Google Big Cheese Rodent Factory, they're not as expensive and still great quality.

I think it was about $40 for me and my friend to get 50 large pinkies and 50 fuzzies? So I can't imagine that 50 small would be more, probably less.

My parents are saying that we can go to petco next weekend. Should I get a corn snake from there or order one online?

Pet stores are fine as long as you keep an eye out for certain health signs. make sure the eyes (if the snake is not in a shed cycle) and cloaca are clear and clean, that there are no mites (they look like tiny fleas running around or stuck in the neck or eyes of the snake) and that the snake is alert. Ask the associates how often they feed the snake and if it is a healthy eater, etc.

It's also a good idea to ask if they have a vet that has seen the snakes.

I got my corn at a Petco around here and he is the sweetest, most docile thing in the world! (maybe this is because he was already used to being held by customers at petco before I got him.)

The plus sign of buying from a pet store is that you can play with the snake and pick the one you like best.

This is a link to a thread that is similar to this one, addressing the cost of everything and the Pet store vs Breeder question:

How small can a corn snake curl up to fit into a hide? And is a water bowl 4.5" x 4" x 1.25" a good size? I'm trying to find the right size hides and water bowls that are big enough for the snake but small enough to all fit in my tank.

They can curl up really small. That's not a specific answer, but if you browse through the photo gallery you'll see a lot of photos of corns in toilet paper tubes and paper towel tubes. The former is fine for a baby corn, and has the advantage of being cheap and disposable.

My first corn came from a PetSmart store (as a gift to me). She's been healthy, but was REALLY hungry the first time I fed her. I don't recommend buying from there generally. The animals aren't kept in very good conditions - wrong temperatures, multiple cohabbing, etc., and no one at that store seems to know or care much about correcting the problems even when they're told.

My other corns were purchased online from breeders (Kathy Love and Susan Willis). Yes, shipping adds to the initial cost of the animals, but the babies were healthy and the breeders were available for any questions. I made the average cost-per-snake lower by buying more and having them shipped together. :D

Once you have everything set up, corn-keeping isn't expensive compared to most other pets I've owned. It's just so darned addictive......;)

In people's signatures, what are the numbers before the name of the animal? Like 0.1 or 1.1. On the website where I think I'm getting my corn from, the one I want has a number 1.00

I've actually been really curious about this too. An explanation would be great!

The numbers indicate the gender. They're written as #male.#female.#unknown/unsexed.
Using my signature line as an example, Yohsong, Doree, Tulip, and Zipporah are females of various morphs; Boz is a male; and I have a male/female pair of caramels as well. None of mine are unsexed/unknown, so there aren't any with 3rd numbers.

oh! that makes so much more sense! thanks!!

so I would write my Melman as a 0.0.1 Normal? (not as interesting as your collection of friends! :))
