Yikes!

Kilala

lemme go! I'm sleeping!
You guys are never going to believe this! I was visiting a school with cornflakes, the kids were studying cold-blooded animals (but mostly I think the science teacher just wanted to see her, lol). Now keep in mind that these are teenagers, like sophomore/junior kind of thing. After I told the kids what cornsnakes eat (mice of course!) something odd happened:

A girl told me that she has an uncle that gave his snake lettuce (apparently he rammed it down the poor snakes throat with a pen!) and it lived longer. I asked her how she knew that it lived longer because of the lettuce. She said that he had another one of the "same kind" that he didn't give lettuce to and it died first. I tried to explain to her that the results from the experiment weren't valid because she was talking about 2 different animals. I told her that it was more likely that genetics caused the difference in lifespans. She then proceeded to argue that the lettuce provided extra water which was important because "snakes don't drink water". I told her that snakes do drink water, and that they are obligate carnivores, meaning lettuce is really bad for them. She told me to prove it. I began to explain that you cannot force an animal to drink water if it doesn't want to (as the old horse saying goes).

Now a water dish was on the counter, i had pulled it out to show her the proper way to provide water for a snake. Cornflakes, who was wrapped around my wrist stretched down and started to drink from the dish! How's that for perfect timing? :)

You should of told her to "put that in her pipe and smoke it!"
haha
haha i love ignorant people, they just make my day.

Wow, i'm really glad your corn seems to understand what to do :D

well, i've heard a story from one of my friend, there was a man (seems to be her friend also) give his snake spinach :crazy02: , and when she asks why he would do that?
her friend just answer : "my snake living on top of the tree, so it wouldn't find anything accept the tree's leaf :grin01:",,what an answers :puke01:

so it also happen there :D

PS : sorry if my english is bad

--Bram--

And since "snakes don't drink water", the poor snake that didn't get lettuce jammed down it's throat died before the other one because it was dehydrated. (And the life-span of the either snake was only a few years...if that). I would like to see that butthead locked in a cage, not given any water, and force mice down his throat, strictly for revenge.

I can't believe anybody would jam anything down a poor snakes throat with a pen !!!! He should be charged with cruelty to animals !! :twoguns:

Naw I would shove roses down his throat, mice would keep him alive.

I heard later that this man had a few of those charges on him already.

Come to think of it, the whole lettuce thing doesn't make sense. It's not like there's anyone there to do that in the wild, right? therefore, he should have known that snakes do indeed drink water.

I've been told by three different pet shops that corn snakes don't drink water the only reason to have water in the viv is for them to poop in???? Amazing, but just one of those dumb things we all hear. susan

Haha how can people be so ignorant? I must say that that is good timing on cornflakes part. The only time I ever see Raydin at the water bowl is after a big feeding (larger than avg small mice than he normally gets), or at night if I get up during my sleep to get a drink of water.

I'll be if you take Raydin out for playtime, and hold him over his water dish before you put him back, he'll take a big drink for you. Hendrix does it almost every time.

That's also bad science because there was no control if it was a different snake, even so for it to be taken seriously you would have to have a few corns doing the lettuce thing and a few not, plus it would help if they were lab snakes that were genetically controlled to eliminate variables.

But aside from this the girl sounds retarded.

This whole thing is crazy! I can't believe all these people thought snakes didn't drink. It just doesn't make sense. All life ( I guess I can't say that cause I might be wrong about some bacteria but...) needs water in it's cells for proper function, so how else would they get it?

It turns out there are secret snake-elves that walk around the world carrying heads of lettuce and pens just to stuff lettuce down snakes throats!

Good timing on Cornflakes part though!

And I like the idea that we put water bowls in there to be used as toilets. If only we could potty-train them.

Wow...Just wow. I am glad cornflake showed that dumb girl who is boss.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people out there who will feed their corns, even though they have been told otherwise, things like lettuce, crackers, crickets...I feel so bad for those poor snakes. I have a show for a school on Tuesday...I think I'll just walk out if I get any grief like that lol

As for snakes not drinking water...who the hell made that up...

Its funny when people try making scientific facts off of one viewing of their snake defecating in its water bowl. Oh I have one! ZOMG guys! Corns naturally hang around upside down! Lolz! I know this cause my snake was hangin' from his tank lid last night! Lolz!

People...is there any hope?

Pen Jamming

When it comes to jamming pens down a snakes throat I have to admit that when I force feed hatchlings i sometimes use a pen to push the pink a bit further down if the hatchling does not automatically start swallowing.
I must say that I do this gently and as yet have never hurt one of my hatchlings.

Ciao

I haven't used a pen, but I've used an unsharpened pencil, the back end of a chopstick, etc. Any slender item with no sharp edges that is smaller than the snake's throat is worth trying, so long as you're gentle about it.

DOUBLE YIKES!!

WT- is wrong w/ people?? I've been wanting to use this icon & this is perfect timing :flames: lol
Yvonne right there w/ ya!! He needs to be :twoguns: lol j/k

YAY for Cornflakes!! Mine the day I got him drank water right out of my hand

BTW lol at some of the post!!

lol. And I'm not even kidding, I actually laughed out loud when I read this.:crazy02:
Seriously though, that girl and the people at Petco are really really stupid, although I must admit the whole toilet bowl thing would be nice.

I once saw a snake enclosure w/ crickets in it at Petco. I tried to tell the manager that this was bad but he said "people will get upset if they see a snake eating a mouse, besides, crickets are cheaper". And then i got thrown out for asking him if he'd ever considered actually learning about the animals he sells.
