Your own forum?

Kat

I'm talkin' to YOU.
I'm debating whether to pony up for my own forum on this site. For those of you who have your own forum, is it worth it do you think? What's good and what's bad about having your own forum, vs posting in the more generic topics?

-Kat

This is a good question, Kat. I've been thinking about getting my own forum as well, simply because next year will be a lot more interesting as far as what will be hatching out, and I think a personal forum would be a pretty good place to hype that up.

I'll be interested to hear what others have to say.

I like having my own forum. I orignally got it in 05 because I did not yet have a website up. Now that the website is done, (well done enough for now) I continued to keep the forum. I do so for two main reasons. # 1. I kind of like having all my "good stuff" compiled in one forum so if someone wants specific news on what's been going on, they know where to look. # 2. So I don't have to feel any guilt about posting the tons of pics I like to post. They aren't always posted in my forum, but at least I know the space I take up here is paid for. The pics I post go a long way in promoting sales and I didn't want to be taking advantage of the forum without ponying up.

I like my own forum...I just forget to post things in it....

I'm hoping to get better about that....

My main reason was to have a place I could post MY stuff and keep it all in one location. Plus, if people want to see what I have (and I ever remember to post it) then they know where to look.

I enjoy our forums. The one is more of a place for questions on the "business" end of things. Though not very active right now, it's a place to leave open for people with questions about the ACR, the newsletter, the morph guide, or what have you. It's also advertising on the biggest and best corn site out there, so that in and of itself is worth it.

On the CCCorns forum, I enjoy that for the reasons Carol and Jeff state. It's payback for all the photo space I take up on the site. It's a place to show off the kids and keep individual threads on their progression. It's a place to corral threads so I can find them. I really need to get more photos taken and get a thread up for everyone, but I'm only partway through the yearlings right now.

The only disadvantage I've found is that unless people use the "New Posts" feature they will generally not browse "deeply" enough to find the member forums.

But, they are still great to have and IMO worth at least as much as we pay for them. :)

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, Serp... It's a shame the database can't just have a pointer from both locations to the thread in question. Yeah, you can do it with HTML links via a new thread, but it's not quite the same thing.

Serp is exactly right about this. I seldom read the member forums. Not to slight anyone, but I forget they are there. I also forget this forum is here, too.

I think this can be done: when you move a thread, you can leave a link from the old location to the new thread. But, I think it would get very obnoxious if all of the member forums were doing that for every thread. ;)

I link to the the member forums via the New Posts, when they are there. When I first started accessing this website I would log in and go to the thread page. I read through EVERY thread, and still do most of the time.

:shrugs: I think it just depends upon the reader/member. For those that do have their own forums, do you see that your threads are read as often as the threads you post in the main forum?

Generally, no. I don't think the threads in my forum are read by as many people as those posted in the main forum. But to be honest, it really doesn't bother me. I know the people who take the time to look at the member forums are the ones who care a bit more and are those whom I would want to read my personal forum threads. I may not always have the time to read every thread every day, but I do eventually get around to reading most of them. I often will not post a reply, but I've at least read the thread.

Will I continue to have my own forum? You bet! It may not be extra special to the general cornsnake populace, but it's special to me. I don't post there as often as I would like, but I know that I have a place I can post just about anything I want to. And I like that ability.

Makes perfect sense! Thanks Susan :D
