your viv size and bulb wattage

hey there im just trying to gather up some info on what bulb wattage would give the best results in diffrent size vivs.
i've read some were that a 75watt will give you an range of 75F-85F in a 10g tank. let me know what bulb you usea and the rage of temp along with the viv size. thanks.

cool thanks and its keeps a fair ambient temp right. is the temp constant or does it fluctuate slightly when the bulbs are on?

That's because nearly everyone uses under tank heaters, not bulbs. Corns have no need for light. Lights are also a fire risk- ask George. A very few people can't heat large tanks with UTHs alone, if they live in a very cold climate, and a couple just prefer lights, but most go with UTHs.

None of the recommendations really matters that much, Giovanni. Your ambient conditions are going to be different from someone else's. I keep my apartment at about 66* year-round. If you keep your place at 80*, you will need to heat differently. You need to do what almost everyone else has had to do and buy a good thermometer and do some experimenting and monitoring. Ideally, you should buy a good thermostat to take some of the guesswork out of it.

Like was already mentioned…everyone does things a little differently.

Personally, I don’t run a bulb to heat my viv…I use a ceramic heat emitter. Why, because I run it all day, every day to keep my ambient air temperature on the “cool” side at 75 degrees without effecting Roxanne circadian rhythm. As was also mentioned, I use an Under Tank Heater to keep my “warm” side at 88 degrees at the glass.

With that said, I also use a compact fluorescent bulb to provide a 12 hour (6AM – 6PM) photo period for her. While it isn’t that that important in the Summer…it seems to help during the winter months to keep Roxanne on schedule.

I run 2 thermometer probes, one for the “cool” side and one for the “warm” side. Both my CHE and UTH are controlled by a Spyder Robotics HerpStat II digitally proportioned thermostat. My compact fluorescent is controlled by a run-of-the-mill light timer. To offset the drying effects of my CHE I use a moist hide for her when she is in blue.

Is this overkill…perhaps but I only have one snake under my care right now so it easy for me to handle and deal with my setup.

Bottom line, don’t get caught up in all of the details (though I gave you plenty) and use peoples suggestions as a starting point rather than an absolute for how you want to setup up your viv.

Regards,
Steve

I use racks for all of my kings and corns. They are heated via thermostatically controled FlexWatt heat tape to provide a constant 85*F at the back of the rack...the "cool end", or the front of the rack, has no supplemental heat or light source. Ambient lighting and temperatures provide plenty of light and warmth. This gives me a daytime temperature range of 80-90*F during the day, and 70-85*F during the night. Wintertime temps vary due to ambient temps. of my house...70-85* day and 60-85* night.

For my BP and my BCI, I use unregulated T-Rex Cobra heat mats on the sidewall of the viv, which provide a ground-level spot heat of approximately 92*F(inside the warm hide), and an ambient temp of around 85*F. I use a 15watt full-spectrum light during the day to provide an exterior basking spot, and they each have branches upon which they can climb to get closer to the light for higher temps. During the night, I use a 15watt red incandescent to provide minimal heat, but prime viewing opportunities.

When all is said and done...my supplemental light sources are not there to provide heating for the cage, they provide small basking areas.

Oh yea...my BCI is in a 29gallon Critter Cage, and my BP is in a 20long Critter Cage...FWIW.

np. the temp is pretty consistent. drops a little during the nite but not to low. I havne't had any problems with the heat lamp. Anubis is digesting his food great. So it works great for me.
