Your wild experiences!

When I was younger, we would take family trips to New Mexico every August. We'd drive from Fort Worth TX to Ruidoso NM, which took us across the desert. My dad and I loved stopping by the side of the road when we saw tarantulas (pretty common on West Texas roads in August). While mom sat in the car cringing in fear, Dad and I would coax the spiders off the pavement. The coolest thing was when he would brush across the hairs on the front legs with a stick or a long piece of grass to make the spider jump. :)

Sing with me now...
"Memories...like the corners of my mind. Misty, water-colored memories..."

I had a pretty wild experience with a very common and calm animal a few years back...

I had a friend in town from Wisconsin and decided to take him down to Sanibel Island (Florida). It is a beautiful island and has this great "drive through" nature preserve. It is great for birdwatchers and photographers alike.

So as we were driving through I saw some white pelicans in the water and we decided to pull over and take some pics. As we were heading back to the car I noticed a pair of morning doves on the ground in front of my car. Now normally when you drive towards a bird - it will fly away - but as I slowly inched my car forwards - these two would not move. I didn't want to run them over so I asked my friend to get out and shoo them out of the way. He went towards the first bird leaning over and making noise and waving his arms to try to get it to move - and boy did it ever! Instead of flying away - it attacked him!! He ran back towards the car screaming like a little girl and the bird landed on top of the door. He slammed the door shut and all I saw was feathers - I thought he had squased it in the door - but then lo and behold - the crazy thing popped up from the floor and landed on my dashboard!! So we both jumped out of the car and left the doors open - and this bird would not fly away. It then proceeded to move to the headrest of the drivers seat...and would not leave. I even opened the back doors and tried shooing it from the front.

Finally I had to pick the bird up and carry it out of the car. It was perfectly fine being handled. Once I had it out of the car - I opened my hands and let it go... The whole time the other bird was still hanging out in front of my car so I moved up there to try to shoo it away - and when I did - the first bird started attacking me!

Eventually both birds moved off and we were able to continue on our way. While all this was happening - a lot of people were stopping and taking picture of the scene and the rest of the afternoon people kept coming up to us and asking "Aren't you the ones that had the bird in the car" - it was so embarrasing!!

LOL :roflmao: I would pay money to see this!

My wild experience also happened on Sanibel. I love it there.

It was one of the funniest things I have ever experienced in my life. I was laughing so hard about the whole episode that I thought I was going to wet myself!
I did manage to get ONE lousy picture of the dove sitting on my dashboard - but it was before I had digital. I will have to see if I can find the pic and post it somehow. I had to have some kind of proof of the ordeal or I knew none of my friends or family would believe me.

Best we could figure is that the bird that was attacking us was a male protecting his mate. The other bird was too big to be a fledgling that mom was protecting.

heres a story.

:rolleyes:the day the horses thought they where being chased by godzilla!

Once i was horse back riding with a few of my friends like we always do. on really wooden trails. you know (green trees everywhere) well we went off the path. just to jump a few dead trees. and as we did the brushes in front of us. moved! are horses freaked!. and we ended up getting back on the trail but as soon as we did. a HUGE iguana was looking right at us. and he was not happy. he was the one that was in the bushes. well as soon as he saw us. he took off running.. At us! my best friends horse lily was so scared she took off. and made me and my other friends horse scared so are horses followed as fast as they could. it was one wild ride. but who was i to tell the horses it wasn't Godzilla. just a pretty big iguana.

:eek1: didnt know what i was getting my self in too.:sidestep:

a few months back i was at my farm house. Alone i went out to clear some trails. to walk on and i saw a few snakes and spiders. after i wanted to go walk by the lake that we have.so i wasn't to smart going alone in the afternoon knowing alligators are there and not bringing a gun...well i didn't know alligators like noise. because right before i went. my father mowed the lawn. with a very loud lawn mower. well as i walked down by the lake everything was fine i saw no alligators so i got closer.and as soon as i did...i was cold. Hearing a very mad and angry hissing sound. :eek1: as a alligator head was out of the water just 10 feet from me. i tried backing away but every time i went to move my leg to step back up(mind you am on mud).on to dry land. it hissed more and came closer. well the alligator was now 5 feet closer i moved. and when i say move i mean Flew. like could walk on water move so fast. as soon as i did that. i hear the water splash that alligator came right out of the water. but not all the way. i turned around to look as i was running. Yeah never going back there! with out someone. :eek1:

yeah found that out first hand. really scary. never going back there again alone lol

I found out the same thing on Sanibel Island. I don't think I ever move as fast as I did that day! LOL

The few wild adventures I've had aren't that great. I

Once I almost stepped on a bull/rattle snake hybrid. They started breeding when we lived in midway.

My mom has had even better times though. She used to run alot, up in the mountains. The first thing she told me about, was when she was running on the trail, a HUGE buck jumped out of the bushes and ran beside her for a little. She said he had giant antlers.

The other time, she was also running, down the road. This lady was driving up, and slammed on the brakes as she came up beside mom. Mom asked what was wrong, and the lady said, "Oh my god! There was a huge mountain lion following you along the road!"

That's about it. Oh, there was also the time I saved mom from the peacock at the zoo. Maybe I'll talk about it later.

Wow what great stories everyone, there's life out there after all (terrible pun, I know). I just thought I'd post some of my best photos from Africa, but believe me, there are more lol.

Oh man...I hope we're not choosing our pets based on our astrological signs. I'm a Cancer. I definitely don't want crabs. :grin01:

When I was 8 a crow attacked me and stole my entire little carton of french fries while I was standing outside a mcdonalds with my family.

I've wanted a crow ever since.

That's hilarious! That bird had some serious guts to do that!

That reminds me of the stories my husband tells about his childhood living on Panama City Beach in Florida. He and his friends would talk unsuspecting tourists into tossing bits of food into a group of 3-4 seagulls, and then they'd run away and watch the tourists get mobbed and attacked by the thousands more seagulls that inevitably show up after they see the first bunch eating free food. Good times. :grin01:

Well, I have a couple of stories:

1. I was hiking in the Appalachian Mountains with my ex and we ran into a mother and baby black bear...Needless to say my ex ran and then had to come back and get me (I was staring transfixed). The only reason we were not attacked was because they were as startled as we were. They were about 12 feet away.

2. I have lived in CO for two years and have run into 4 rattlesnakes at close quarters....I have BAD mojo on trail rides. I have even had one strike up at my horse as we walked over it. We did a jump straight into the air about five feet and galloped out of there!

3. A wild turkey chased me while I was on a hike two years ago.

4. A puma spooked my horse on a trail ride (same place as the rattlesnake incident, incidentally).

As you can tell, I must have a "come and scare me, dangerous wild animals" aura. I'm going on hike tomorrow..hope nothing goes wrong....
