eagle catches deer. You got to see this

When I lived in Colorado, I saw many Golden Eagles, I remember seeing one on the side of the road, you just can't appreciate how BIG they are until you've seen one in person.

ps) trivia: Ben Franklin did not want the Bald Eagle to be the National symbol, he would have preferred the turkey instead.

That video was amazing! I absolutely love birds of prey. If I can ever get into falconry, I want a male kestrel!! Those little guys are great!
 
Wow that a crzy video. I know golden eagles do hunt moutain goats and baby deer but I've read that they can be trained to take larger animals like foxes, large deer, and even wolves.

I used to know a guy that kept a few different BOP...
One of which was a Golden Eagle, that he kept in his garden tethered to a large tree stump...
I'll never forget the thoughts I had when I found it for the first time during a BBQ... Slightly drunk and looking for somewhere to spend a penny....
These birds have talons as long as my little finger and legs thicker than a welders forearm....

I can sympathize with this deer; only my Eagle was an alligator. LOL.
Dude SERIOUSLY though. If I EVER saw that happen, I'd be running for it. I don't wanna be next!
 
Took awhile for me to open this thread. Golden eagles are quite capable of hunting and killing small deer like the one in the video. The power in their talons is simply staggering, and I ought to know! I used to have no trouble handling Victory, even worked her on a lure once (she hits the lure like a ton of bricks and comes back to your arm with similar enthusiasm). No trouble, that is, until I had to hold her to have her beak and talons filed down to remove the sharp points. She never forgave me for it and would give me the "I'm going to kill you!" grip thereafter. Needless to say, I didn't handle her unless it was absolutely necessary! Oh, and her weight was about 11-12 pounds. Birds look heavier than they really are. The lappet-faced vulture, Lightning, was the heaviest bird of prey I handled, tipping the scales at about 17 pounds.
