Home made perches for arboreal snakes

MysticExotics

(formerly NWHeather)
I've been brainstorming, trying to figure out how to set up perches for the IJ's. I settled on something free standing, so it's easily pulled out, to wash, or whatever.

I use 1/2 pvc pipe, "T's", elbows & caps. I didn't measure the pipe, i just eyeballed it. I had sections cut into 1ft sections, which I cut to smaller sections. I made 4, with the material I had on hand. I made two to fit in the 30qt Sterilite Ultra bins, for the babies, & two a little bit larger, to go into the 64qt Sterilite Ultra nis, for the juvs.

Here's pics of the perches, & a side view of one of them in a juv bin.

If you make something like that, and then briefly take a propane torch to it, you will get a slightly twisted and scorched perch that can look a lot like a branch! Experiment with an extra piece of pvc - you will be amazed at the effect. And it will also give a better gripping surface, too. Try light scorching and heavy scorching - both have a very cool, and very different, effect!

We make similar structures for our macaws. The one thing we always add, to help with gripping for them, is vet wrap, which we wind all the way around any horizontal surface (and sometimes vertical, if there is a long stretch of it). I don't know if it would help snakes grip, but it might be something to look into :).

hey thats not bad..cheap and effective!i like it thanks!
No problem :)
I figured someone might like these too.
Someone else told me that their carpet snakes like a "T" top, which can be done with these, by replacing the top elbow, with a "T" connector, & two sections of pvc pipe.

Thank you Kathy!! That's a cool idea! Now I need a propane torch :D

I bet, so you have them on hand already. :)
I have lots of the vet wrap (I keep first aid stuff for my fur kids). Would the sticky be a problem for the snakes, if the edge came unwound? I know it's not very sticky, but I wonder if it would still pose a problem.

I found out that you can get cheap bamboo poles from just about any hardware/craft store (at least around here) and cut them down to size, then glue them to the side using silicone. I'd post pics but.....I haven't done it yet...someone told me how to and so that's what I'm going to do tomorrow :)

BTW....Nice Carpet ;)

Thanks! I might try that too. I'll hafta stop off at the hardware store.
I checked out the links for the scorched pvc, & they look great!
I'll be working on some creative ideas for my snakes. :)

Which one? LOL

Yes, we have bird perches all over the place--at least 3 which are made of PVC. We haven't made any for the snakes, though--I actually use sandblasted manzanita in the vivs to provide a bit of "rough" for them when they're ready to shed (yes, they climb them, too :).

I have no idea if the vet wrap would pose a hazard to snakes. I've never had vet wrap simply unravel on its own. The birds will pick at it and tear it apart over time, at which point we simply add more (yes, we always have vet wrap on hand--we get it from local feed stores, usually), but I've never seen vet wrap just "let go" of itself. I suppose if it did, it might prove "interesting", in that it's usually wound on in long strips, and I don't know if a snake would get tangled up in it. If that happened, and the vet wrap again stuck to itself, it might be a lot of "fun" (NOT) to sort snake from wrap....

The vet wrap would be a great idea, if it didn't pose a problem for the snakes. It's not too terribly sticky, so I wouldn't think it would be bad, unless they tried rolling around in a pile of it. LOL
Sounds like you're pretty creative with accessories for the creatures too. :)

I don't have a torch, but I might get one.

All of them of course! I can't wait to get mine....I'm counting down the days lol

Are you getting one from Deb? I just picked up two from her. I was planning on just one, to pair with Karma, who I *think* is a female, but don't know for sure yet. She settled that, by convincing me that I should get one of her male Jag babies, a female Normal, & then it wouldn't matter what Karma ended up being, because I'd have both sexes. LOL

I've updated my IJ thread with pics of the new babies. Daz bit me, when Deb was pooping him to confirm sex. LOL These Carpets definitely let you know when they're not happy. LOL

Yea I saw those! Gorgeous!

And I'm going to see what I can find at the expo next week and if I can't find anything....I'll definitely see what she has left! All of her babies I saw when I visited were beautiful.

She's got a really pretty Normal male, (PHG 10-03 on her iHerp page) that I considered, but I decided to pick a normal female & male jaguar.

I'm sure she'll have someone left for ya ;)
