Gecko Wrangler
My name is Donna, I'm a crested gecko breeder, and this weekend my daughter and I acquired our first three corn snakes at the WNY Herp Society show!! She's only been driving me nuts for as snake for 5 years or so...:duck:

I've done snakes before-RTBs-about 30 years ago, so I figured I'd come here after having your forum recommended by a fellow Fauna Classifieds member.

I'm a total novice at the whole snake morph thing, although I can talk about crested gecko morphs for hours...in my sleep.

I remember 99% of the snake care basics, but I'm here to brush up and improve!!

I'm just afraid that I'll be learning so many new things about corns that it'll knock all my crestie knowledge out of my brain...LOL.

Here are our new beauties!!

Coral-from the breeder-she's "66% possible het Anery, Charcoal, Diffused, Hypo. Parents are Normals proven het Albino, Anery, Charcoal, Diffused, Hypo"

I'm pretty sure the second one you got there is an Charcoal. It is a type of Anerythristic (Anery - for short).
I might be wrong but I think thats right.

Kohl is either a charcoal or an anerythristic (anery for short) and Rose Bud is definitely a snow (anery + amelanistic or amel for short). If RB turns out to be male, call him Bud Rose! Welcome to your newest addiction. As I am sure you know from geckos, reptiles are addictive, nobody can have just one or two! :rofl: My signature represents the population expansion in 1 year, when I joined I had 0.0.1 amel Humphrey and no ACR #

Rose Bud is a snow for sure, Coral an amel (with some impressive hets!) & Kohl is either an Anery A, usually called just Anery or an Anery B which is usually called Charcoal. They can look similar but aren't compatible. Here's a good site for learning some basics about genes. It has pics of almost all the morphs, both baby & adult. There is also a calculator linked to that site that is fun to play around with & see what you'd get.

LOL-I know what you mean. When I started with cresties, in December of 2006, we had just purchased our first unsexed crestie.

Less then 4 years later, we're at 8.7.34 Rhac. ciliatus, 0.2 gecko ulikovskii, 1.0 Beagles, 0.1 Lhasa-poos, and 5.4 felis domesticus.

I've done boas, Leopard geckos, Goldens, Bibrons, anoles, turtles, and a pair of Graceful Chameleons in the past, too.

Wow-I just realized I have no idea of the Latin nomenclature for corn snakes!!

But add 0.1.2 for the snakies!!

And it's funny-when somebody new joins any of the gecko forums I belong to, I always go introduce myself and add..."Welcome to your new addiction!"

The noobs rarely have a clue where they're headed with the purchase of that first gecko, so they think I'm a bit crazy!!

It's Pantherophis guttatus, although I think they were previously Elaphe guttata until the Old World & New World rat snakes were separated.

God-this is all so confusing!!! Crestie morphs are a cinch compared to these guys!!

LOL-it does make sense to me...sort of. I have an strangle analytical mind.

So what would happen if you bred them together??
 
You'd get all normals 100% het for both anery A & anery B. If you then bred those babies back to each other, you would get babies homo anery A & anery B or showing both traits.

Okay-level with me. Why aren't Anery A & Anery B compatible??

Both of them remove red. Somehow they prevent the snake's skin from making red pigment. And if the snake is heterozygous, enough of the necessary gene product (protein) gets made that the snake has the normal amount of red. But they have to prevent different steps in the red-making process, because a double het, het anery A & het anery B, is classic colored. So let's say there are 5 steps in the red-making process for discussion's sake, something like this:

Substance A is turned into B by protein a
Substance B is turned into C by protein b
Substance C is turned into D by protein c
Substance D is turned into E by protein d
Substance E is turned into red pigment by protein red maker

If Anery A is an animal that doesn't have any protein a and Anery B is an animal who doesn't have any protein b then the double heterozygote has 1/2 the normal level of a and 1/2 the level of b and looks normal because a low amount of a or b gets the job done. This means the genes for them are at different loci, maybe even on different chromosomes.

Hypo and strawberry are at the same locus and act on the same protein (we could call it h), so you can have a homozygous hypo snake or a hypo/strawberry or a homozygous strawberry. Amel & ultra, same thing, you can have amels, ultras or ultramels.

Just keep in mind I made up the A, B, C, D etc, I don't know what real geneticists are using as the symbols for corn snake color genetics.
