Blue Jays in the Yard

[Insert Witty Commentary]
These birds are loud, cantankerous, and slightly offensive with their behavior, at times. But they are always beautiful, and their brazen attitudes make them decent photo subjects. These two were romping in the front yard, picking at peach pits…

Couple of ornery Jays

This little guy got curious, and came in fairly close, letting me get a couple really decent shots of him…

Getting braver...

"What are you?"

You can almost see the quizzical nature of his glance, as curiosity wins out over fear, and he comes up to check me out. Really cool birds…as long as I’m already awake…

Thanks for taking the time to look!

Very nice shots. Cool birds. What personalities! They're quite different from the blue jays here in the North East. The colors are more vivid. Thanks for sharing.

Do you know the latin name for the jays in your area Ty? Those are different from the ones we have in Colorado and I know the name, but it escapes me.

No idea. I'm honestly lucky I know they are Blue Jays! There are always a ton of birds in my yard. One of these days I will get a guidebook for birds in my area, and try to learn about them...

Thanks, everyone, for the comments!

A quick Google search produced some results...

These are known as a "Stellar's Jay", Cyanocitta stelleri. At least as far as I can tell...

Great pics as usual. Such pretty birds. So much nicer then the blue jays we have here in michigan. Thanks for sharing them with us.

Those Jays are gorgeous.
I love to black, much prettier then the Ontario Blue Jays.

Though I don't remember ours being loud haha.

Yep. Steller's Jay. If I was at home, I could grab my six or seven bird guides. The jays here are species C. cristata I think. I'll provide a picture. If you want, I will dig out a really good bird id site for you. I'm great at finding all sorts of id sites.

I stole this picture from: http://www.kiwifoto.com/blog/tag/black-capped-chickadee/
