I now hate elephants...

Well, drawing them, anyway! Just finished up this (16x22) piece tonight after working on it for a total of 6-7 hours. I simply used HB and 2B graphite pencils. It's a gift for my favorite vet/professor here at Texas A&M. She's done so much for me this year after I nearly fell apart when my parent's got divorced. She's also been kind enough to write me wonderful letters of recommendations for both my graduate program and for my vet school application. Her favorite animal is an elephant (especially African), hence the subject of this piece.

I was hoping to have more time to work on it, but alas, it's finals week and I have a heavy work load. So, my full effort couldn't be applied. I think it turned out well enough, though! :spinner:

Thanks for looking! I'll be surprising her with it on Thursday!

Wow, that's great! You're a really good artist and I'm sure you'll professor will love it. Are you planning to frame it before you give it to her?

Thank you! I haven't drawn something on this scale in years, so I was a little worried I wouldn't be able to execute it. And no, I really, really wish I could... but I have trouble affording groceries and gas, let alone custom framing (since it's weird dimensions).

Looks fantastic!

Have you considered making your own frame? I am no carpenter but I cant imagine they would be THAT hard to make. On the other hand it may take some time to do if you haven't don't it before.

Just a thought.

You have some talent and a bit of skill there. That's a really nice piece.

You may want to give some thought to doing it as a sideline. Your work is really good.

Beautiful. Man I wish I could draw like that. I still draw people with circle heads. Framed or not that's a wonderful gift Jessica :)

Thank you all!

No, I've never made my own frames, nor do I think I have the time. My mom suggested giving the piece torn edges, mounting it on a solid piece of mat board, and then framing it. That way I could pick a traditional size frame without having to get one custom made. Hobby Lobby always has a 50% sale on their frames, so I'll be heading there tomorrow morning to see what they have in stock.

Awesome work! I just made a print of an Elephant doing a trick on a ball, except the ball is replaced by an Elephant skull. I took the easy way out and used photoshop's threshold filter and then drew over that because I was doing screen printing.. but I wish I'd taken the time to draw myself. Your work definitely shines as an example of how beautiful something can be if you just put your mind to it! Awesome detail.
