I only got a little snake and a little viv. but seeing all of these made me very jealous :) Everyone has done an amazing job on theirs! My boy needs to get big so I got more decorating space ;)

Some of them are seriously amazing, but its an effort to clean all of this once a month you see, but I guess its something your snake deserves from you :)

Here are my four vivs. Still have a couple things to do. One needs a background and most still need some vines/climbs.

That's why I am gonna try out the bioactive substrate approach... once you get it going, it becomes self cleaning - as long as you keep the conditions ideal for the bioactivity with human cleaning not necessary for years at a time - at least according to my reading materials.

whats bioactivity substrate???

whats bioactivity substrate???

From the book "The Art of Keeping Snakes":

What is a Bioactive Substrate?

A substrate that has active bacteria and other micro-organisms, including algae, fungi, protozoa, and soil nematodes, is said to be bioactive, meaning it contains biological agents that perform work.

i.e., it's a substrate that is alive, and contains "friendly" bacteria that aids in the cleaning and maintenance of the vivarium.

Several advantages to bioactive substrates include:

  • It is self cleaning
  • Bioactive substrates do not stick to the skin of snakes
  • Snakes generally love burrowing in it
  • It more easily allows the growth of live plants than other substrate options, like aspen

Indeed it is very interesting, do you mind giving us a link to one of those substrates? Im interested in pricing, the look, size etc :p

New Viv, and recycled viv.

I just got this Viv from a wife that vetoed her husband's decision to get a ball python. Lucky for me! I ended up getting it for only $60. And with that, I moved my Kenyan Sand Boa to a larger viv.:D

My vivarium for my Texas Rat Snake is almost done, I just need to get the background printed out for it. I hope it turns out the way I am thinking it is going to. The viv for my corn snake is small and not very exciting. Once he gets bigger and gets an upgrade, I will go all out.

So you've decided to separate them? I might put a divider in the middle of my new tank. I saw them crawling around on top of each other last night, and when I woke up this morning they were curled up in a hide together. Considering the amount of hides and the size of the one they were in, it's hard to believe snakes cannot develop complex emotions.

you know, a divider isnt a bad idea! especially for them at a young age! You could get some aquarium silicone and split it in half. Let them eat that day or something in a separate container and it should dry by the end of the day. PLus when it comes time to give them a bigger enclosure, you can just use a flat sharp knife and cut away the silicone to open it back up for one of them!

Well, that enclosure is kinda large for a single corn. It's 36x18x18. I might just pickup a pied python and let it be his. And get the two babies a couple 20gL.
