Anyone use BAH-1000DC Thermostat?

I had one of these before with my beardie (probably wasn't the DC model back then). Never had an issue.

Got a new one early October for my 10gl with the heat pad and by mid-Nov, it freaked out and went up well over 90. I unplugged it and sent it back, they returned it and I believe they put a new DC chip in.

Well, now I'm afraid to use it! I know it's not the best thermostat out there but it should be a fairly decent one.

Opinions? Sell it on craigslist or ebay? Keep it in case I ever need it for my 10 gl?

Just wondered who else has used these with problems or no problems.

Thanks!

Test it and keep it in case you have a thermostat die on you.

I liked the first BAH thermostat, which was identical to the Alife. Then they changed it, and I had two as back-ups on my racks, and didn't like them, and took them off. Now this one that you have is the third.

I _really_ recommend saving up for a Herpstat ND, or the basic Herpstat. I feel like if you have a problem, the owner, Dion, will not BS you and put your animals' lives at rish- he will fix the problem.

I have only had poor customer service with BAH.

Once you have a _reliable_ thermostat, you'll never go back to cheap.

Thanks Nanci.

Right now on my big cages I have a Ranco. I got it with my cages. If I ever get a Herpstat, I could keep the Ranco as backup. The BAH would ever only be for my 10 gl should I ever need that for anything.

I'll hang on to it just in case. I'll plug it into my empty 10 gl and see that it's working. I'm thinking it had my 10gl up to 93 or so.

ETA: Does anyone know if the Ranco shuts off automatically if there is a problem? I was just reading the herpstat info and I see they do. I've not been able to find online if the Ranco does.

Also, I had once been told that the herpstat type will make your electric skyrocket. I can't imagine this, does anyone know?

Basicly the answer is Yes. If the Ranco is configured correctly it should fail with open contacts. However, if the contacts should short closed then the heat will not turn off no matter what and that would be all types of T-stats. When the Ranco I had failed it did fail with open contacts.

Also, I had once been told that the herpstat type will make your electric skyrocket. I can't imagine this, does anyone know?

The electricity should be the same or even a little less. A proportional T-stat does stay on all the time but the voltage is reduced as the set point is reach to maintain a consistent temp. The only time you would have wasted electricity is if the manufacture did not have a minimum voltage setting. All heating devices have a range that they can operate effectively within and once out of that range they become ineffective and waste electricity.

Actually, the Herpstats are "on" all the time, for the digital read-out, but they aren't supplying current all the time.

I am running 11 Herpstats plus two Alifes plus two lizard heat/light set-ups plus supplemental AC for one lizard and my electricity bill is virtually unchanged from when I moved in here, except I got a better AC/heat pump, which lets me run the AC colder (for the snakes, not me) at a lower cost than my previous model.

Ok, thanks. I'll probably run the Ranco for a while and eventually get the herpstat.

Thanks for the detailed explanations :)

Nanci - I'm glad you want to keep you snakes cool! Or better, probably not too hot in FL.

I have a Ranco and I love it (I also have a herpstat and love that one more). It was my first thermostat. Its a bit bulky but it works great. One time it wouldnt turn on. Apparently I had a power surge that reset it so that it wouldn't turn on anymore. Fortunately, there was a reset button inside the housing. Even though it turned off, Im glad it did that instead of stay on and overheat my snakes.

I'm currently using the BAH1000DC for both my snakes. I bought it because it was described as one of the best thermostats on the market for reptiles. Now I'm not so sure, haha. How much do the Herpstat ND's run price wise? And if I wanted to return my BAH's for something like a Herpstat, will they accept a return if I no longer have the box? I haven't had any real problems with the BAH's, however I'm thinking a digital thermostat might be a lot easier to set and control to keep a steadier temperature....

I doubt BAH would take the thermostat back. But it never hurts to have a back-up.

Spyder Robotics has sales at least the week of Thanksgiving and the week of Fourth of July, but it's only like 5-10%. Worth waiting ofr ifit's close to that time, otherwise, not a huge loss.

Other places resell Herpstats, but I've always gotten them direct from the manufacturer. I have also bought one used and it has been fine.

I have always gone back to Herpstats (built and sold many enclosures that used them). Over the span of many years, the $40 to $50 extra you spend on them is more than worth it.

Hmmm...I wish I'd done more asking around before purchasing my equipment. Like I said I've had no problems with my BAH's thusfar though. The only thing I can really complain about is the fluctuation of temperatures can be within a few degrees of what is desired sometimes. I only ask about price so I'd know what I'm looking at spending, not because price matters more than my snakes well-being. Two Herpstats is something I'll have to probably save for though, but can hopefully get in the near future. Any other suggestions on types/brands of heating pads, thermometer/hygrometers, etc. you'd recommend above others, or any types/brands you'd not recommend?

Like I said, I had a BAH1000 years ago for my beardies and it was fine. I'm going to hang on it just in case I ever need an extra.

I noticed the degree thing as well.
