Developing situation at Virginia Tech: According to a Virginia Tech press release, two victims now dead in ongoing active shooter incident on campus. One victim is a police officer who was performing a traffic stop near the Coliseum parking lot.

Campus gun ban continues to be ineffective at keeping illegal firearms off campus, but ensures that only option available to defenseless students and faculty is to seek shelter and hope to stay safe.

From what I can tell a cop was shot at a traffic stop, the shooter fled on foot and shot someone else in a carjacking and escaped. So not a mass shooting.

Sad.

Also this is a perfect example for the pro gun control crowd. Gun control laws only serve to disarm the law abiding!

There are now reports they think that the gunman is dead. I have a friend that lives there and all her childrens schools are also on lockdown.

I agree with tsst. It always seems to take the guns out of us gun owners that live by the law and into the hands of those that dont!

Let's not turn this into a pro gun rally, please? This is about a tragedy at Virginia Tech, not personal opinions on gun control.

Because I think it's more important to focus on the gravity of the tragedy itself. People died. I'm thinking about them at the moment, not the gun involved.

Just heard on the news that the second death was the shooter himself. What a waste. Why'd he have to shoot a cop during a traffic stop? Was that all really worth it? Let's guess- not a student...

There are many people out here in Tacoma that still have blue lightbulbs in their front porch lights in honor of four officers that were killed in an assassination style shooting almost excatly two years ago. I'm glad that the shooter was killed by a Seattle cop a week later when he tried to ambush another cop with the intent to kill.

I'm curious to hear more about who this VA Tech shooter was and the motive. I bet he was just scum.

It is a tragedy and very sad. But anything anyone says about this or the politics of the matter will not bring the dead back, or change the pain the loved ones are feeling now. But you can bet the politicians and the media will use it and twist it to fit their own agenda. Their spin will start on the news tonight, and will echo everytime this horror is mentioned. So where this goes on here is where it will go.

The trial started for Virginia Techs challenging the 55k fine the dept of education levied against them in regards to how they handled the 2007 shooting massacre, started yesterday. I wonder if its related or just a random act of violence!

I heard that, too. How/why do they get a fine for how they "handled" the shooting? Who gets the money??

I guess the dept of education which says

"The department found Virginia Tech violated two provisions of the federal Clery Act, which requires universities to disclose crime information on campus and also maintain security plans and procedures. University officials, according to the department, failed to disclose an accurate version of the campus security policy to students ahead of time and then failed to issue a timely warning to the community on the day of the shooting."
