Why Proper Grammar Is Important

My friend posted this on his Facebook and I had to share here, for those who should know better, but don't care to write correctly. I'm not picking on anyone with real reasons for bad grammar. This is only for those who think chatspeek is ok, or who can't take the time to edit what they've written.

Grammar/Capitalization is important-- it's the difference between helping Uncle Jack off a horse and helping Uncle jack off a horse.

Maybe people will see this and understand why many of us will pounce when we see poor grammar.

I know I'm the new one here, but I can't resist:

What are your thoughts on proper spelling and punctuation?

I'm certainly no expert, but, as far as I can tell, you have at least one grammatical mistake, a number of punctuation errors, and one spelling mistake in your first paragraph.... :)

<sigh> I think I see at least one punctuation mistake in my last sentence. Which is why I generally don't comment on someone's grammar or punctuation. ;)

I only comment when someone cannot be understood due to their poor grasp of the English written language. Of course I make mistakes, but everyone who's ever read my posts has no problem comprehending what I'm trying to convey. The posts like this -

u no i got a snake an it only eatz mice n i wnat it to eat corn cuz its a corn sake can i keep it in a ruber box i got 2 mor snaks will they h8 each otr

That is a blatant disregard for basic communication skills. That's when I get upset. We all make typos. I can let most slide, except when I find them amusing to point out.

Feel free to correct me. I'm curious.

Sure. :)

In my non-expert opinion:

- "My friend posted this on his Facebook and"

should be either: "My friend posted this on Facebook and" or "My friend posted this on his Facebook profile and".

I can't properly explain why I'm right and you are wrong :), but I am pretty sure I'm correct.

- "and I had to share here, for those who should know better, but don't care to write correctly."

should be:

"and I had to share here for those who should know better, but don't care to write correctly."

If you have a phrase like "for those who should know better" spliced into a sentence with commas, you should be able to remove that phrase and the sentence should still make sense. In your case it would not.

Like in my response: "I'm certainly no expert, but, as far as I can tell, you have at least one.....". The "as far as I can tell" can be removed and the sentence still makes sense.

"This is only for those who think chatspeek is ok, or who can't take the time to edit what they've written."

You should not have the comma before "or" and chatspeek is spelled chatspeak.

There you have it. :)

It's those pesky commas...such a pain in the patootie.

Gosh...I hope I spelled patootie right. ;)

I know. I was just having fun, given the topic of this thread.

While I'm at it, I think my sentence of:

I'm certainly no expert, but, as far as I can tell, you have at least one grammatical mistake, a number of punctuation errors, and one spelling mistake in your first paragraph....

Should read:

I'm certainly no expert, but, as far as I can tell, you have at least one grammatical mistake, a number of punctuation errors, and one spelling mistake. All in your first paragraph...

There's probably more issues, but whatever. :)

I get what Kathy is saying. It's frustrating when someone uses "text speak" to write a post, because they're too lazy to write it out correctly.
It's frustrating & hard to follow a post that is written without any periods or commas, so it ends up being one long sentance.
