Why Proper Grammar Is Important

Haha. I know I still mess up a LOT, But since coming to this site all the people correcting me have helped a lot.

I all ways used txt talk,never used any ,,,, or ..... but I feel like I have come a long way after reviewing my first threads/posts.
 
*clicks thread, expecting a "let's eat grandma/let's eat, grandma" example* *chokes on carrot cake laughing at the example used instead*
 
I know I make a lot of mistakes when I type, but grammar is one thing that I generally take seriously. I used to pick over all my sentences and remove words such as "really", "just", "very", "pretty", and remove "the" as much as possible. I used to be crazy when it came time to proof-read peer papers, I usually marked up the ENTIRE page. Fellow students generally liked to have me look over their papers though, they usually got A's after ;)
However, that was in high school. I can say that in my three years out of there, my grammar has gone down the pooper. I make sure that when I write serious papers or write stories that they have proper grammar, however.

I think in Dutch grammar we cannot use a comma before the word and in this sentence actually.... Interesting!

I was taught that it was not important to place the comma before "and" in elementary school, when I was in high school my teacher told us that we should, just because of examples like this! haha.
 
I always use the Oxford comma as well! I was always taught that it is correct either way, but I prefer to use it always. Then again I have a tendency to use too many commas sometimes.... haha
 
Besides the comma, another debated topic: Double spacing at the beginning of each sentence.
 
I personally am big on double spacing and use it in all my business documents. I find it definitely easier to read than a single space after each period.

I've never done this and I find that it looks sort of ... uneven? I can understand that maybe for some it makes paragraphs easier to read, though.
 
How about using a period at the end of a sentence that contains a quote? Such as, "I was thinking about purchasing another snake.". The second period looks strange, but it actually ends the formal sentence. That's what I was taught.
 
I think with quotes you leave the period out before the quotation marks. I think it is "I was thinking about purchasing another snake".
 
I did use a poor example. If you were quoting a complete sentence, with its own punctuation, wouldn't you leave it in? I get so confused.
 
Isn't it though...?It's amazing how the human mind tries to work around the craziness! When I read text speak it's like learning how to read again. I'm moving my lips and sounding out each word. Hooked on Phonics worked for me!
