News Article about Python Challenge and more

A bit torn on this story...nice to see them not portray all snake keepers as crazy, but still don't like what is going on with the "Python Challenge".

Yeah - the article wasn't that badly done, but the "Python Challenge" is just... I can't see it making any real difference as far as the genuine problem of invasive Burmese pythons in Florida, and it strikes me as a prize opportunity for people to exercise a particularly idiotic sort of macho in the form of animal cruelty. Some of the methods these people are using sound bloody dangerous as well - I sure wouldn't want to be playing "grab the tail and dodge" with a large python! Not to mention the number of clueless people with guns running around shooting at everything that looks vaguely snakelike...Perhaps it is really a subtle plan to cut down on the population of *fools* in Florida?

I really have no problem with the idea of people being able to hunt these snakes, but the way they are going about it is just stupid and crazy on so many levels! Sounds like half or more of the people showing up for this "challenge" are a bigger threat to the native wildlife than any number of invasive pythons!

That's my thought. How many plants and animals have been killed or had their habitats damaged/destroyed by a bunch of yahoos tramping around with guns, how many native reptiles have been injured or killed by idiots shooting at anything that might have scales (the expert in the article had to get up close to realize that what looked like a python from a distance was a gator tail), and how many people have been injured or killed by "friendly fire"?

All I can say is that if I were going to Marco this month, I think I'd fly into Naples even though it costs more than to fly into Miami-I wouldn't want to drive through "Alligator Alley" right now!
