Help! New To Me Snake - Not Friendly.

You need to learn how to do the cornsnake treadmill to wear her out!



Here is a TERRIBLE example of a snake that doesn't really want to go- he just wants to chill. I'm not really dragging him...But with an active snake, you just hold the front half and rotate your hand so the snake makes a figure eight.

You can't go wrong giving it a female name. I have a rat snake named Oscar that I raised from a baby. I named him that because he was a feisty little wild snake when I caught him. Eight years later he laid 8 eggs.

DYK- That would be a treadmill that would really get them moving ( for about 2seconds).....

First off, to the OP THANK you for rescuing a snake in need, you are going to fall in love :)
How is your confidence doing? You'll be comfy in no time!

Also, NANCI!!! You are BRILLIANT with your treadmill!! <3 I cannot thank you enough!
I have been I guess doing 'physical therapy' for my girl, her muscle tone was/is really low. I will totally use that!!
 
I fed her yesterday, and so I haven't had a chance to play with her again yet!
However, We have hung out multiple times. I only use the glove to pick her out of the tank (I like the idea of her knowing the blue glove is me picking her out, so that'll probably continue). However I can hold her no problem still. I am a little apprehensive with her going near my face, but with time I will trust her more. Confidence is going up!
My dad came over, and she seemed to like him a lot more than me (warmer body probably). I even managed to get my snake disliking roomates to hold her! I think they secretly enjoyed it.

I am a little concerned about her tank temperature - just because it is getting colder, and my room is always freezing(I live in a basement). Not sure how to gauge it. I keep reading that the heating pad without something to gauge how hot it is is really bad (which is what I have - and she has had for ten years). However, I don't know how to fix that. :/

If you kiss her a lot, you will get used to having her near your face :). Just on the body, not on her lips!!

WHAT? Why not? I kiss my snake on the lips all the time. I gave her some "noogies" the other night because she was acting skittish. ...Helped calm her down. ..IDK I really think they adjust to us given half a chance. I purposely get face to face with Oscar but then I constantly push her to the limits. But Oscar also just loves everyone and frequently ( NORMALLY) enjoys the company of strangers over me. But we have been together a long time and I do believe a (bond)--(trust)----developes whether only by training and not the conscious reaction of domestic pets- a workable relationship nonetheless.

Just disregard this post-Bad advice. ..I believe in what I posted, but it takes a lot of carefully controlled steps to get there. .I should clarify those first. Maybe later- just enjoy your baby for now. ...

Do you have a thermostat? And thermometers (especially the probe kind placed on inside of the glass above the middle of the UTH)?
With a thermostat you can set the UTH to 85F. Without it, the pad can get WAY too hot (120F+) and burn your snake! :(
 
A healthy snake shouldn't burn itself on a heating pad. Unless the air was very frigid or something, just like us -they won't be on a surface that is too hot for their comfort. I just say this because the whole "no thermostat and the snake could get burned" thing gets thrown around a lot, and simply isn't true. The entire enclosure can overheat and kill your snake, and a thermostat is a priceless piece of equipment. Also if the only hide is in an improper temperature, they will often choose hiding over being the right temp, but most burns I've seen are from lighting and heat tape failure. I ran Flex wide open for almost two years (temps reached 145 on the surface of the plastic), as an experiment. Waste of space and electricity ultimately, but not dangerous in the open topped 33" Vision tubs. You couldn't do that in a standard rack or glass cage, obviously. You do want to get a thermostat if you don't have one, I just feel the need to nitpick why!

Back to Cleo, I am so proud of you! She seems to have settled right in.

She is lovely, and the cornsnake treadmill totally works incredibly!

As for the heating, I actually fear it isn't warm enough. I will look into getting a thermometer, next paycheck! Thanks guys.
