Prefered Brand of UTH

Only thing I would point out is that you don't necessarily want to set the thermostat at 85. 85 is where you want the surface temp to stay. In most cases, your thermostat will need to be set several degrees higher. This is one more reason to get a good IRL thermometer and tinker with the enclosure a couple days before putting an animal in it.

Good point, I use rheostats (there is nothing to set, it is a dimmer switch that I control) but I have had great luck with them.

What does the IRL stand for?

Hydrofarm makes nice, thick, BIG heat pads for seed sprouting. They're quite a bit less expensive than a zoomed or exoterra pad of the same size. No adhesive, so you need to use metal tape to secure it.

One thing that I discovered by accident-hydrofarm has seed starter sets that contain a plastic greenhouse-type thing, some peat moss seed starter tablets, and a heat pad. Last year, those things were clearanced for well under half the price of the heat mat itself, so it's worth looking into if you want a spare around to be ready for an unexpected failure or a new snake.

Good information. I'll have to keep an eye out for the sales!!!

Okay so my purchase list for my new set up is; 2x Digital Thermometer, 1x Proportional Herpstat 1 and 1x Ultratherm (11 x 11) all of which I'll be setting up in a new twenty long with a locking lid, the screens don't seem to fit the 10g very well. I also ordered copies of Kathy and Don's books. All that's left is substrate and décor (hides, water bowl, leafy things). Any thing I'm missing?

Um, a snake?

Just kidding, you have the right grocery list going! I suggest you read the books in full (you can skip the breeding sections for now) before you get your snake, but I think you are going to be a terrific snake daddy.

What morph are you planning on getting, if you haven't already said?

I have zoomed and exo terra deserts, I like both. I really like the rubber risers that come with the exo terras. Exo terra has good customer service too. I had one uth come without the risers, I called and they sent some out to me no questions. They were apologetic and sent them fast.

ZooMed has the rubber risers too, and one thing that I do is have a larger size one that two tanks share. The pad is straight down the middle underneath between them, and the rheostat has kept them within a degree of each tank. The pad is more flexible to curve under each tank.

I am particularly attracted to Abbotts and Miamis. So fingers crossed for the WCRE. And it would be mommy in my case:grin01:

I use Zoomed Reptitherm personally and I've had pretty good luck with them. The only problem I ever have is when I order them through Amazon they seem to die within a few months.

Oops! I have a friend named Jace, so I just figured... Sorry about that, mom!

All of this is good info! I was just about to post the same question. Any opinions on thermostats to go with an Ultratherm UTH?

If you're frugal, you can't go wrong with the Hydrofarm thermostat. Can get them off Amazon for ~$35. If you've got a bit more scratch then Herpstats from Spyder Robotics or a VE series from Vivarium Electronics are always sound investments. They can get pretty pricey, but offer a plethora of options that make it worth it, from night drops to multiple unit support and proportional control.

I went with the Herpstat Prop 1, but if I'd known about Hydrofarm the price would have been tempting.

So I received my package from the Bean Farm, and I was reading the instructions on the ultratherm. Does anyone use the "insulating polystyrene" under the mat?
