How does everyone decide in a name?

Out of all the animals in my house I've only got to name one of them! Lol He is a jet black cat so I named him Midnite (after Papa Midnite from the movie Constantine). My kids have picked out names for the rest except for the dog we adopted, she had a name already. So this is what names we have:
1)Black and white cat- Oreo
2)brindle pitbull- Chocolate
3) Nomal motley- Optimus Prime
4) Snow- Snow
What are yours?

I picked the names of my pets before we had kids.
The ones still alive are a ball python named Kaa, and an okatee corn named Salazar.

The ones since we 've had the kids, A cat named "woody" but we all call him "baby kitty". The dogs name is "Beau" but he had that name from the shelter and responded really well to it so we didn't change it.

oBall python "kaa"
Bearded Dragon "toothless"
Corn snake "Salazar"
Corn snake "Ana"
Corn snake "Christoff"
Corn snake "Olaf"
Corn snake "Sunny"
Corn snake "Snowy"
California chocolate king "bumblebee"
Hognose "mr. Pig"

I think thats everyone...

My Pug's full name is Chiisai Kuma, which is Japanese for 'Little Bear', but I just call him Kuma, or little monster, little stinker, etc, lol. My Axolotls are all named for mythological monsters: Kraken, Hydra and Drakon. My corn snakes are all named after characters from my various fandoms: Kaa (Jungle book), Trillian (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy), Madame Vastra (Doctor Who), Sif (Marvel Comics - Thor), and Doctor Horrible (Doctor Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog).

I am terrible with names...it took me a week to name my dog Lucy...My dogs are:

Harrison (he was a seriously goofy looking puppy so he needed a dignified name)
Lucy (I went a week calling her "little girl", and I wanted a classic name to go with Harrison)
Brach Samson (total mama's boy/bodyguard wannabe, also I like The Venture Bros.)

Bullseye (black and white kitty with a white spot in the middle of his black back)
Floyd (that's what he told me his name was)

Corns are all named after some sort of Japanese demon/lore character
Omnom aka Orochi
Kiyohime
Kuraokami

Rubber boa
Mimizu (Japanese for earthworm)

Ball Python
Nile (He's an African species so...)

Beardies
Sid and Nancy...(they had a love/hate relationship when I got them...)

Heres some of mine....
Hellga- kastanie with bad attitude.
Sweet Tooth- cottoncandy snow.
Honeybee- honey corn named by my daughter.
Kesh tess- teserra named after kesha which my daughter loves.
Candie and kane- candycane pair
Habanero- cayenne fire
Midnite- mexican black king
Californication- california king
Snickers- hypo stillwater bull
Its always fun naming them!:dgrin:

I name differently every time. Sometimes by their colour, sometimes attitude, sometimes characters. But I always know when one "fits". My one Blizzard had her name changed many times before I decided on one.

Dogs:

Chihuahua/Min Pin (Black and Tan) = Shiver (Named after the fact she shakes a lot)
Chihuahua (Blonde) = Louie (Never changed from his old owners. They named him after a king)
Miniature Pinscher = Magnuson aka Maggie (For her high activity level we named her after a supercharger)

Blizzard corn = Went from Spirit to Khaleesi, then settled on Hiccup (How to Train your dragon)

Butter Corn = Yoshi

Amel = Tony Stark (The red orang-ish colouring gave me that)

Amel = Secret (I purchased her as a secret from my BF)

Granite = Pepper (His colouring)

The "frozen" themed names are new and just the hatchlings named. My daughters one snake has a different princess name every few months. She picked ana so she could name the boy snake Christoff and they could be "married". Im sure it will change again.

Thats so cute and something my daughter would do!
My daughter's snow has many different names. My daughter says her snake has many (and I mean many!) Middle names. I never know what the name will be next. Lol

I usually name my pets names that I just like. Sometimes I've read the names in a book. Sometimes I'm not sure where I heard the name from. I've decided to go with a Norse theme for most of my reptiles. I didn't have a theme in mind. But I gave two snakes Norse names and decided to just do it for all of them.

Corn snakes:

Sylvara - Named after a Dragonlance character, Silvara.

Sigurd - Was originally named Sigyn (one of Loki's wives) until I found out he was a male.

Ruby - Is my boyfriend's corn snake. Named because of her ruby red eyes.

Kingsnakes:

Jack - My boyfriend's kingsnake. Named after Jack from the Nightmare Before Christmas. He reminded us of the snake that eats the Christmas tree. But it doesn't have a name. So, just went with Jack since he is also black and white.

Jörmungandr - Named after the World Serpent (one of Loki's children). It just seemed to fit him.

Fenrir - Another child of Loki. I know Fenrir is a wolf. But I like the name and it fit the theme.

Geiravör - Is the name of a Valkyrie.

Geirahöð - Also the name of a Valkyrie. Sadly this snake passed away only a few months after hatching.

Iðunn - Is a Norse goddess. I think it's a pretty name for a very pretty snake.

Bearded Dragons:

Torvi - My boyfriend's dragon. I made it up. We both liked it.

Artemis - Also my boyfriend's dragon. Named after Artemis Fowl (a book character and also the name of the book).

Astrid - The newest addition to our house. I've always liked the name. Plus it fits my theme.

I generally pick names that just come to me, but sometimes I pick names that are related to that morph or in the case of the dogs, the breed. My Rhodesian Ridgebacks are from Africa....Akilah is Swahili for Intelligent. Ona is not an African name but she happens to be ridgeless so I think she's One of a kind....Ona. My snakes I sometimes pick names that go with where they are from. Some of the Amazons were named using Amazonian Indian names...Katari is one. Utari, my Green tree python was a Papua New Guinea tribal word. Matrix reminded me of lava rocks in color so was named for the matrix in lava rock. Dante, the same. Ember is an orange/red so that's obvious. Fuego was a bright red baby so I named her after fire. When I had Okeetees I named them Indian names. Tepin, meaning branch. Coatl and Acatl were Aztec Indian names because they had aztec markings. Bazooka Joe was a bubblegum snow, Lumiere was a neon.Tre' is a tricolored green tree python. Some I just make up because I like them. Othello is my eyelash viper....Zipper is my copperhead....Vida is my Mexican Cantil and Light is my neotropic rattlesnake. Tempest is one of my other green tree pythons...who knows why I picked that....she's the mellowest snake I own. Oceana is a false water cobra so I named her for a watery type of name. Serena because she's just so pretty. I named a baby amazon I produced that I'm going to keep for his father that just died of old age. I made it Danjur...short for Dante Junior. CJ is short for Clyde Jr. Where he was found, there was a donkey named Clyde and the girl that found him wanted him named that....Speedy is my coachwhip.....Ricky is my black racer for obvious reasons....Waterloo is my watersnake. Pumpkin and Hope were already named. Named the cottonmouth Toast...don't know why....just did....Zephyr and Tapestry are the other two cornsnakes I have. Just liked the names. I also have the obligatory Jake the Snake....

My daughter named all of our reptiles and amphibians.

The frogs are(were)
(deceased)
Tiana and Naveen (from the Princess and the frog)
Anura (from the class for frogs/toads)
Current
Rana (Latin for "frog")
Batrous (Phonetic Greek for "Frog").

Snakes are
Wadjet-carolina corn, A snake headed goddess in Egyptian Mythology

Pinkie Py(thon)-Ball python, named Pinkie by his prior owner, and DD decided that he was Pinkie Py(thon), like Pinkie Pie, the My little Pony. So, we have a male BP named after a pink cartoon horse. I'm not sure why his prior owner named a male BP Pinkie.

There was a similar thread on this awhile back, so I just copy/pasted my reply from there, with some modifications for new additions and deletions.

Iroh - Green Tree Python (ATLA themed)
I think that's all the named snakes ...

Almost settled on names for these but not sure they are going to stick just yet. These are all in the Firefly theme but there are a few other names we could use in that theme instead.

Badger - Charcoal Tessera male corn snake
Persephone - Charcoal Tessera female corn snake

Monty - Male Ghost San Felipe Rosy boa
Bridget - Female Ghost San Felipe Rosy boa

Geckos ...
Miami - Crested gecko (don't remember how he ended up named that but it set the theme for the rest of the cresteds)
Cairo - Crested gecko (she was named that by the person I got her from and it fit with the theme I had going on)
Luxor - Crested gecko (I bought him with the intent to pair with Cairo, so found a town I liked the name of in Egypt to name him)
Sierra - Crested gecko
Gizmo - Gargoyle gecko (took about a year to come up with but it set the theme for the rest)
Gadget - Gargoyle gecko
Gauge - Gargoyle gecko
Glitch - Gargoyle gecko

Box Turtles
Pell - Female, name from the same book series that two of our cats are named in.
Dag - Male, same as above.

Plus 2 GTPs that are unsexed and have names picked out for each if they are males or females but need to know which they are first ...

WingedSweetheart, I love the Dragonlance novels too, and I was THIS close to naming Vastra after Silvara! Great minds think alike, lol.

Sometimes it takes me forever to name my reptiles. It was a year before I "named" my green tree python, and even then he's got 2 names, "Chain Chomp" and "Morbo the Annihilator". I suppose his full name would be Chain-Chomp-Morbo-the-Annihilator. Often I just call him "The GTP" when referring to him. I also still have a cornsnake that I haven't fully committed to a name (I've had her for probably 3 years).

For other critters, I've got 2 cornsnakes Lestat and Akasha (Anne Rice theme), 2 black milksnakes Envy and Wrath (sort of a cardinal sins theme), and a gargoyle gecko named Avari (taken from The Silmarillion).

Tavia, I saw "Atticus" and got excited! "To Kill A Mockingbird" is my favorite book and movie of all times, and was going to go with that theme sometime in the future, but yours seems to be a different book. Which book is it?
