Question. I've heard people feeding chicken necks to snakes. I want to try to add some more diversity to my snakes diet. I found someone who sold them so i decided to buy some and give it a try.

Does anyone have any experience feeding chicken necks? I know they don't have everything the snake needs so i keep mice the main diet, and give a neck every 4th feeding or so. If this works i may try to feed hamsters or gerbils later on but that's not the issue right now.

I heard people cook the neck to kill bacteria. But you don't cook chicks? So should i feed raw or cooked? Do i have to worry about anything else? Bones for example? Do i run risks of salmonella infections?

That was me and yes you should boil them , also you can give your snake canferbacter from raw chicken among a lot of other pathengins

I don't understand this. Boil them only if you feed raw? Whats canferbacter? Doesn't turn up anything in google.
 
Vinny means campylobacter. Yet another nasty bacteria found in raw chicken.

It just doesn't sound safe to me. I can see feeding chicken if you live in Fiji and can't find any mice, but when you have a ready supply of clean food? Chicken is _so_ germy.

I think whole chicks are safer (or may be- I don't know for sure) because the bacteria grow better on meat rather than animals. It's on the animal, but during butchering, it gets a foot hold and gets out of control. Then we kill it by cooking.

thats why I boil all my turkey and chicken weather they are muscle meat or organ meat
 
If it's safer i will boil it. Don't want to risk anything. But wouldn't you think a snake could deal with it? A human would get sick but would a snake? I would think nothing gets cooked in the wild and their digestive system has no clue what to do with that.

Not to mention the bone. Doesn't the bone of cooked meat splinter and break while raw is save?

chicken it not a natural food item, they dont come from north america. The slauter house is a dirty place. Do what you want . you asked, I'm giving all my info and what the bronx zoo's reptile house superintendent told me . Just read all my threads on the subject
 
Is chicken fundamentally different then birds? You didn't tell me your opinion on the splintering of bone.

I just want to make sure before i feed one to my snakes. If i don't feel comfortable in the end i'll toss it in the bin.

Well you already invited be before but i live in holland and only have a mobile phone. Install Skype c'mon ;)
 
Vinny fed his snakes for quite awhile on chicken and apparently had no major problems. I'm sure that with a little effort, you can find the thread(s) on the subject. But keep in mind that Vinny's approach was not well liked at the time and there were some very heated discussions. Vinny has toned down a bit, IMO (but he's still a bit of a diamond in the rough), and is actually a very nice and knowledgeable breeder and keeper. If you have the time, give him a call to discuss the topic. One of these days, I'll get a chance to talk to Vinny on the phone for more than a quick moment.

I'm sorry, break up bones into very small peaces on body parts remove any big or sharp bones. bring water to a boil add meat when water comes to a boil, boil for 10 min. when using neck remove the large few vertebrae at the base of the neck. dont use turky necks bones are too big for cornd use on large kinge and med size boa & pythons. I feed pultery about every 3th meal about 1/3 of their total diet for the year. Hope this helps:)

I'm just guessing, but I suspect the big differentiator is that in the wild, birds don't live in the filthy conditions or have the same "get 'em plump, health be damned" diet that commercially raised chicken endure. Chicks, having not spent as much time in those conditions, are probably safer. Again, this is my completely uneducated guess.

Doublehet, that's something else to consider- the typical grocery store chicken has been fed all kinds of antibiotics and hormones- do you want your snake eating that? I wouldn't even eat that myself! You'd probably be better off feeding organic chicken. The way meat animals are raised really grosses me out.

No it's from an official feeders company. Something like you have 'Big cheese' over there. You can order whole chickens as well.

sorry but I fed it to all my animals and they are fine . if you realy look at there is no such thig as organic anything more the rain, the air, is polluted that was a thing of the past. all organic means it that there is no drugs or hormones in the stuff . Big deal you being a cycileist breath more toxic fumes from the roads you travle. Like myself I live right across the street from I-95 do you know how much toxin's I breath in just by living here. colubrids don't live as long as humans so these compounds wont effict them like it would us:smash:
