I'm going to have to surrender my horse

New Avatar!
I have been having a bad week, sorry to spew, but I need to.

So my horse, Jazzy, has just been diagnosed with some sort of hock disease that is progressive (of course the vets cannot tell me exactly what it is...:angry01:) She is limping so i just spent upwards of 350 dollars on her to figure this out and it turns out that all we can hope for is that injections might work..maybe.

So I get back from my short vacation (haven't had one in over a year) and I find out that my stable hadn't fed her all of her painkiller, which makes me angry.

So she is still limping even after the painkiller and the two weeks off, so I suppose that she will need expensive injections that i cannot afford. She is not a particularly valuable horse as she is nine and had been abused before I bought her, so she has major behavior problems like rearing. Plus she is not very well trained and is very green in her mouth. There is no way i can afford to keep a non-rideable horse that needs expensive injections to MAYBE become rideable someday. Especially one that i do not enjoy riding because i am always training and never just enjoying my rides.

I want to sell her so that i can buy a rideable horse, but she cannot be sold because of her health issues plus the behavioral issues (no one would want her). So i am going to have to surrender her to a horse rescue if I don't want her to go to auction.....

I feel so terrible and gulity but I really cannot afford to keep a horse I cannot ride or enjoy, as much as I'd love to give her a forever home. I am a student with limited means in college.

I am very stressed because this is such a hard decision to make, especially with all of my school stress from finals coming up. But I need to have a rideable horse, or it isn't worth the money I am spending.

So here goes a long and arduous journey into the land of surrendering a horse and trying to find another that fits me well....anyone who has bought a horse knows the process is like blind dating both the horse and its owners...not pleasant.

I don't even know how hard it will be to find a rescue that will take Jazzy, as they seem really full right now.

I am so depressed and stressed :(

Sorry, had to rant

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope that it turns out you are able to keep her, but it might be better that you find her a good home or at least a good rescue, where she can get the care she needs.

Thanks. I am going to try t get her the care she needs until she can go someplace else. But I am carefully researching rescues to make sure she goes somewhere good. What she really needs is a very wealthy good trainer who deals with problem horses...not likely around here.

That's what we do these days with animals. We buy them but as soon an were not entertained, like when the horse dares to get ill!, just sell it and buy something new and fancy. And when that horse gets sick you just buy the next one that will hopefully match your expectations of entertainment level.

Selling your animal because you rather go on vacation then spent the money for treatment makes me sick.

Oh, and i haven't had a vacation, not even a short one, for 4 years because noone wants to take care of my snakes. I guess i should try and dump them at a resque as well. That is what there for aren't they? Stupid responsible me.

Oh sure i am aware the whole forum will start to attack me for beeing so harsh on poor little clipclopclip. Guess what, i don't give a .

And THERE goes double het YET AGAIN!!

Funny thing, it said it would leave the forum the LAST time we had an issue with its rudeness.

Actually, I'd have tried to say it more diplomatically, but I do agree with your general trend of thought.
There is the potential though, if the horse has something like spavins that it wouldn't even enjoy life retired out to pasture, depending on how much pain it has. If the pain is under control, if it was me personally, I'd keep the horse, enjoy groundwork with it to keep it fit and give it an active life. If the pain isn't controlled, I'd have the horse euthanised to end it's suffering.
Not many horses live out their lives with just one owner, children grow out of their ponies, competative riders trade up to better horses, it's one of the sadder aspects of the equestrian world.

I understand having to give it up if you can't afford the right treatments, but perhaps if its only going to get worse, the answer is to put the horse down and not pass on a bill and the problems onto rescues that are already overloaded.
And don't get another horse yet. Lease one or just not ride, but if you can't afford treatments for this one, then you really should not have another. Not to be a jerk or overly harsh but it's the truth. When something goes wrong with a horse it's usually very expensive. I have watched my mother sink thousands into horse's medical treatments, even a great healthy horse can injure itself or colic.
if this illness is temperary and can be cured, then talk to the vet about your finances. They will often work with you. Trade for work, make payments, find the meds through other sources *like jeffers* and do the shots yourself. If you talk to a horse vet they can usually work with you. But yeah if this is something that is only going to get worse...be responsible and put the horse down yourself. Rescues have their hands full with horses that are adoptable and healthy.

I don't even know who you are yet you've been attacking me in other topics for no reason at all. You don't seem to understand the meaning of rudeness and i find you quite personal and spitefull. I wonder if you keep your words...

I see no problem is selling a horse at all. I do see a problem not willing to pay for treatment and thus making it the problem of a resque center and then buying a new horse to top it. He already struck me as unresponsible making the stable responsible to give him painkillers. It's not their resposibility. You wanted to horse, you are responsible for it's care. And noone else.

If you don't want to listen to me, listen to this guy! Your not a jerk, you use your brain and care.

Oh sorry. I forgot there is no free speech in America....

I don't need a cooling period. There is *nothing* wrong with my post other then you not liking me. This forum administrator really should put some people in charge who know better then to just ban people for nothing at all.

Well, I'm no moderator, but that just might justify a permaban on that ip.....
and if it does all I can say is thank you, o rude one, for coming back!! :)

LOL. I change IP's faster then you change moods.

I was banned for no reason at all. Did not reviece a notification either. I had to know didn't i :D
