Bearded Dragon Tragedy

Before I get started, I mostly posted this just to vent my anger and sadness.....

Last summer, a friend of mine asked me if I wanted her bearded dragons. She had bought them for her son (who promised to take care of them), but her son lost interest. I told her I'd be glad to take them. We made arrangements, but she stood me up.

This went on all summer. She would tell me when to come get the dragons, I would show up, she wouldn't be there.

Then, on Wednesday of last week, she sends me an e-mail at my work e-mail address and asks if I still want the dragon (singular). I asked what happened to the other dragon. She said she had moved into a new house and had given the dragons to her brother. She then went into this long story about how he hadn;t taken care of them and one of the dragons had died.

Then, she's like, I've got the survivor in my car with me right now. So, I took a break, went down and got the dragon (with a 40 gallon tank) out of her car.
I said, "wait, let me get him out.." When I picked the dragon up, I immediately knew his situation was grim.

He couldn't open his eyes, and he was as thin as a sheet of paper! I told her it was terrible that she let him get in such a condition, and that she would bring him and his cage to me in such a shape. The tank looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months, so it was full of dragon poo and dead crickets.

She keeps blaming it on her brother, but I told her they were her dragons and still her responsibility. Because of my soft heart for reptiles, I agreed to try to nurse him back to health, which I knew was going to be a tough battle.

Anyway, I took him home, put him in a separate container while I thoroughly cleaned his tank. Had my roomie go to the pet shop, grocery store, and home improvement store with my credit card to buy a UVB light kit, heat light, thermometer, new tank decorations and hiding spots, some dragon food pellets, green veggies and fruit, crickets, and play sand.

Once we got him all set up, I called my local vet to see what I could do. My vet couldn't see the dragon right away as he had to go out of town for a few days (he's the only vet in town that knows anything about reptiles). He told me that I could get some special eye drops for reptiles at a pet shop downtown and he would see us when he got back.

I got the drops and began medicating the poor dragon's eyes. He was finally in a nice. clean, warm home, had all the food he needed and someone who would finally care about him.

Day before yesterday, I finally got him to eat on his own, and he finally decided to have a drink of water when I misted him. Then, he just barely opened his right eye, looked right at me, and closed his eye again. I thought to myself, "Yes! He's getting better!"

Then, when I woke up yesterday morning, I went to check up on him and give him his eye medicine....but he had passed away...and on the same day the vet returned from his trip. :(

Needless to say, I'm really sad about the poor little dragon, and majorly peeved at my "friend."

Now that I've got such a lovely set-up for a bearded dragon, I guess my only option is to begin my search for a new one.

Oh man, I'm so sorry to hear that. I can't stand people that take the lives of others for granted, especially of those who can't speak or fend for themselves in those conditions. First of all, I'd like to commend you for attempting to do everything to nurse that poor dragon back to health, that was a noble and selfless thing that you did, and I'm proud of you.

Bearded Dragons are such wonderful creatures and they make great companions, so I'm sure you'll find one that will steal your heart. It's a good job that there are people like you and many others on this forum that care for animals, it's just a shame that there are so few compared to the majority who'd rather take the easy route, even if they're fond of animals. That's why when I go to university in 2 years time I'm going to study either veterinary science or zoology, so I can try and make a difference, no matter how big or small.

All the best

David

Oh I am so sorry...What a sad thing. People like that should not own animals...or be allowed to buy more. At least he passed away in better conditions, comfortable and happy.
So now is your chance...scrub it all down, rearrange it *so you won't think of the loss as much*, and go get a nice high red one! :)
Or even better maybe..go to a local rescue and save one!

Thats appauling! Poor berdie, and poor you!
I know exactly how you feel, my first beardie was dumped on me in a similar coincidence of events, so i know how infuriating and upsetting the whole situation is...i am realy sorry! :eek1:

That's so sad. A friend of mine just got done letting his leopard gecko starve to death. By the time I convinced him to take it to the vet to find out why it wasn't eating, it was too late to help. When people don't know what to do, they unfortunately often just do nothing. I had a friend that did that with a box turtle hatchling, too, who then blamed the vet because it died when she finally dragged it in for treatment!

Oh, well. Isabel sends hugs and says you need to go out and buy a nice fat beautiful bearded dragon to comfort yourself. She says they are the coolest of all herps!

Thanks everyone.

And whippet, A a high red dragon... that sounds nice. I really like the leucistic ones and the orange ones with lavender sides.

There's a reptile show in my area today, where I purchased both the corn snakes I own.. Too bad i have to work, because there are always loads of beardies there.

"Tara...and yes I am a girl and I have a wife!"

Really? Coz I'm a boy and I have a husband. :)

Awww... I'm so sorry to hear that. I'd be pretty mad at that person too.

Since you already have the stuff, you can check your local rescue or craigslist for another dragon.

Sorry to hear about the Beardie.
It is a shame it was treated like that.

I have three and really love them, they are too cool.

I'm sorry to hear that - no animal deserves to be put through that. Good for you for trying to do everything you could.

I'm glad you are going to get another one - they make sure wonderful pets! Not to mention the spectacular colors they develop!

For real! I had never really looked at color morphs until today. I had no clue the colors were so diverse and bold! Have you seen the ones with lavender sides? Yooouza! When they say lavender, they mean LAVENDER!
