20/20: The Royal Family

Nanci

Alien Lover
I just started watching this two hour special. Why do I, an American, feel such an affection for the Queen of England? Is it my 1/2 English ancestry? At any rate, this looks to be a very good program...

I don't know if I have any English ancestry, but I kind of feel the affection toward her that you describe. I like reading about the cool, morale-inspiring things she did in WWII. But my admiration for British royalty ends with her generation. When I see photos of Charles, and especially his sons, I feel like punching them in the face. Dunno why exactly. They look so smug about the life of privilege that they didn't earn. I get the same feeling looking at Paris Hilton. Of course, I'm a bitter, jealous old man, so that could be part of it too. ;) Elizabeth isn't just an empty celeb.

Charles, and his treatment of Diana, disgusts me. He should have married the woman he loved to begin with.

I grew up in a house with a huge portrait of the Queen in our living room, right above the TV. Newfoundlanders revere her. Of course, Canada is also a member of the Commonwealth.

Unfortunately for both he couldnt, she was a divorcee and so would bar him and her as queen consort from succeeding the queen.

However well done to Harry for bein in Afghanistan and the Duke of York was a pilot in the Falklands.

I personally dont think the Royal family do anything anymore.
Shes the Queen, but what does she do?
Im proud to be british and everything but I think that everythings gone to pot over here.

Im happy that Harry is doing something good for the world, but hes being pulled out soon.

Thanks Nanci because of the time difference I watched the show and found it fascinating. She is a bit fiesty, but that's OK. I don't live in England or have ancestory from England, so my statements are that of an outsider. Elizabeth was 25 when she became queen, what a huge responsibility for such a young woman. When I think of all she has seen and done, I do admire her. As for William and Harry, they've paid their dues. When my mother died I could mourne in private. They saw their mother dragged through the mud. They work and Harry was in Iraq.
I kind of like all the "pomp and circumstance". I also liked what Tony Blair said about her that you could tell her anything and it would go no further. Again I only see what comes across the pond.

She can stop the army from hitting our streets, against us.
Golden Brown ( Thats what we call our PM, Gordon Brown , A Stranglers reference...LOL), has to ask the Queen if he can use her troops. In countries with no Royalty, the government controls the armed forces, so they can be deployed against the people.
There's one good thing she does.......:dancer:

Susan, did you see that movie last year, The Queen? It was really good. It was about Queen Elizabeth and Tony Blair and how to handle the events after Diana's death.

She "does something," she's the Head of State, right?

Definition of Head of State, FWIW:

Head of state or chief of state is the generic term for the individual or collective office that serves as the chief public representative of a monarchic or republican nation-state, federation, commonwealth or any other political state. His or her role generally includes personifying the continuity and legitimacy of the state and exercising the political powers, functions and duties granted the head of state in the country's laws and constitution.

Wow, she's the HOS of 15 countries. Sounds like a lot of work.

I greatly enjoyed the show.

I thought it was well done, and a fascinating glimpse into a culture I am not familiar with.

dawww! Another newfie!
I remember singing "god save the queen" every day along with "O Canada" and the lords prayer in school in NFLD, when I moved to NB all we did was sing "O Canada".

Actually, I'd be surprised if they still did "God save the Queen" and the lords prayer anymore, it's all outdated stuff now a days.

Agreed, and Matt Drudge deserves a slow, painful death for outing him.

I despise media whores, even when they try to make themselves out to be "reporters".
