Just curious...we will be moving to this area in a couple months. We like Hobe Sound but it seems a little pricey, so we are more likely to end up in Palm City or Stuart. Any thoughts or advice for those that may be familiar with the area? Thanks!! (can't wait to live there and go snake hunting! :))
 
I don't live in that area but my parents have owned a home in Palm City since 1987. I know the area like the back of my hand and can honestly say that you won't regret the move. What kind of advice do you need(where to go herping, restaurants, beaches, nightlife, fishing...)? There is so much to do so close you'll have a tough time deciding what to do with yourself. Funny that you ask about the area considering I'll be there on Thursday for 10 days.
 
I'm not that familiar with the Treasure coast as I'm located in the Nature coast. You'll be arriving before the REAL hot and humid weather arrives, as well as before the main hurricane season as well. But I"m sure you'll get used to it. If you have any dogs or cats, be on the look-out for parasites of all kinds and any skin problems. Allergies abound down here and transplanted pets suffer the most. Sorry to mention some of the down points of Florida...I've been here maybe too long. I have to keep remembering the winters in New York.
 
I still remember the winters up north...You're going to love it down here! I like that side of the state- been on a couple bike rides, have run a few trail marathons in Melbourne. I live right in the middle of the state, not on either coast. Start making plans for Daytona!!
 
Thanks guys! I'm really excited...I lived in Florida when I was a kid, so I do remember a lot about the weather. I do have a dog, so I know we will have to be diligent about her care. I am excited about having things to do....love the beach, and we will be just a couple minutes away if we end up in Hobe Sound. Hubby says I can get as many corn snakes as a I want once the move is finished (yippee! I have been on a 2 snake maximum while here)

From what I can tell, the nightlife is somewhat limited to the small local bar scene in that area. Downtown Stuart has some very nice restaurants/bars you'll want to check out. Remember, you're so perfectly positioned there that you're only an short turnpike ride south to the West Palm, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami action.

When it comes to fishing...where do I start; anywhere you see water!!! Depending on what you are after, you've got the St. Lucie and Indian Rivers, inlets with jetty walls, beaches for surf fishing, bridges, piers, boat rentals and guides etc... Last summer I was surf fishing at Bathtub beach (you may have heard of it; if not, you will) and hooked more than 20 tarpon up to 200lbs.. I only landed one about 90lbs., but that was crazy stuff from the beach. Stuart is known for it's incredible snook fishing as well as being the sailfish capital of the world. I caught the biggest largemouth bass of my life out of the golf course pond directly behind my parent house (I own a bass boat and cover a lot water, I still catch more and bigger bass out of that silly little pond).

If you and/or your husband like to fish for something specific, let me know, I can put you in the right direction.
 
I'm in St. Lucie, I think you will like the area. What Cornell said is correct, fishing is one of my favorite things about the area. There is also a regional Herpetological society with many great people.

You think you'll be able to go to any of our get togethers? Mostly Orlando and Tampa. There's a Tampa show in April!

Sorry about the wait. They are pretty good, speaking from experience. They are about even with Martin county schools most years.

Yep, just above Martin/Palm Beach counties, almost directly east from the top of lake O.
 
I rode around that lake once. I thought I'd see at least one snake, but no. Couple gators right at dawn.
