"Shadow" Melanistic Black & White Columbian Tegu.

Jay@PJCReptiles

"Quality Before Quantity"
Hi Everyone,
Thought I would share a couple of pictures of one of our newest adoptions. This is "Shadow" a 1.0 Black & White Columbian Tegu. I believe him to be between 5-6 years old. We acquired him through a friend who took him in from some idiots (and that is being very nice) who did not have the knowledge on how to take care of such an animal. When my friend got this guy in he could hardly walk do to lack of proper vitamins, minerals and UV light (MBD). My friend also had to attend to a major burn he sustained that ran down about 2/3rds of his back due to it's bedding being piled up too high under the heat lamp and the Tegu could not walk and get out of the way....nice huh? Some people should not have animals! My friend nursed him back so he walks around without a problem and the burn is 98% healed. We have had him for a couple of months and he likes his new home just fine. He is thriving and finishing up his healing with us and can look forward to a descent life. It just shows how a little care and proper husbandry can go a long way. I would like you to meet "Shadow". Thanks for looking and I hope you like.
Jay

Very, very cool. What a lovely guy, how's his temperament? What size tank is he in?

Oh and that tongue is awesome, it looks like taffy!

All the best

David

thats really cool, really sad story though, its such a shame that so many animals get treated that way.
Its nice to hear about a success story every once in a while especially considering the
beauty of the animal.

Hes freakin amazing! I have never seen a melanistic tegu before?
Either have I Elle, that is why I just had to have this guy and give him a fighting chance.

He is a puppy dog. Super easy to handle. I have him in a 110 gallon at the moment and that should be fine as he shouldn't get much bigger. I will be building an outside encloser box for him and his two friends to enjoy the sun this summer. He is our third Tegu. I think his tongue looks like a skinned piece of salmon....lol.

Thanks, he is doing great but he still has a little way to go. He is shedding off old layers of skin constantly and I thought he would lose his tail but that doesn't seem to be the case. Thanks for the reply.

VERY cool, Jay! I'd like to get into Tegus someday...

jazz
Dale,
You would love these guys. They don't call them the "dog" of the lizard world for nothing. These guys will actually seek out human attention. Especially the Black & White Argentine Tegus. You could house one very easily. You can even train them to go poop in a box. So, free range would be an option as well, as soon as it was big enough. Super easy to take care of as well. Just give them a diverse diet and some UV light and your all set.

Thanks for the great replies everyone, I am glad you like him.

Exactly why I first got interested in 'em...remember this video link that Jenn Rose first posted?

What put me over the edge was when I held I juvie Red Tegu at the Tinley show two years ago....it was love at first sight.

But dangit, I'm cramped for space as it is.... :angry01:

Hehehe... I still watch that video longingly. LOL. Someday. Even Adrian agrees now... the day we move into a larger place, there will be a Tegu in our home. LOL!

Melanistic though?! I'm in love! How's that little B & W baby you posted pics of awhile back (Some of which are STILL some of my favorite Tegu photos of all time, ever!).

That video is from Rick Sisco (The Tegu Man). He lives here in Maine and he is the guy I got my Black & White Argentine from. It is one thing to look at them from afar but when you hold one in your hands, you are all done....lol.

Jenn,
The B&W Argentine is going great. He had slowed down a little over the winter but we have just bumped up his temps and he is getting very active. He has lost all of his green and it is being replaced by a bright, white coloration. The pictures you are talking about are when he was only a couple of months old. He wasn't much bigger then PJ's thumb. He is over twice that size now and is quite the ham. I will have to get some updated pictures of him and post them for you. As a matter of fact, I will get some pictures of me with all of them so you can get some reference to their sizes. We have a B&W Argentine, a Columbian Gold and now this guy. These guys are super cool and I would suggest getting a Tegu to anyone as long as they have the knowledge as to how to take care of it. I am glad you like him.

Wow! Thats a pretty cool guy you have there. It makes me wonder some times how people treat their kids when you see how they treat animals. Nice save guys! He looks wonderful. I am sure he has many years left now that he part of a family like yours. :)

Jay, I recall you previously mentioning that that's Rick in the video clip - I didn't know he lived in Maine....which begs the question.....

Do you have any idea how long he keeps 'em in outdoor pens, given the change of seasons? I don't know the exact temp requirements of Tegus, but I'm betting dollars to donuts that 4 months would be tops for an outdoor enclosure in Maine.

Then again, maybe it's because I'm going through the second snowiest winter on record here in Wisconsin (and the snowiest in MY lifetime).

jazz

What a nice big boy! I'm so glad he ended up with you guys. A big free-range lizard is really cool- I had a free-range iguana. He had his "area" which was up on top of a huge brick mantle- he had a big climbing tree and his heat pad that he slept on, and he would go to bed up there every night, six feet above our heads. During the day he'd hang out in windowsills or wherever. He discriminated between thr four cats we had- he hated/shased the tortoiseshell, ignored the male Siamese and male gray tabby, and cuddled with the female Siamese.

LOL omg I want one! And I thought the beardies were supposed to be the puppy dogs of the lizard world. These guys are super cool. I am glad that this guy has found a great home to be in. It is a shame what happened to him though. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people out there that shouldn't own a pet.

HaHaHa we love the tongue pics...lol
My daughter who is still up w/ me asked what kind of Dinosaur he was...LOL (he may have ancestors who are)

Its way past our bedtime..lol
