If Only Mice Were Like Worms!

Nanci

Alien Lover
I just got my order of silkworms and hornworms (for Isabel, the dragon) from Coastal Silkworms today.

I ordered 100 silkies- got 166.

I ordered 12 hornworms- got 19 that I can see.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if frozen mice suppliers over-counted like that? No DOAs, either!

This is my worm set up, if anyone is curious:

I'm glad my mouse supplier is generous with me. Of course, he's local and gives me freebie odds and ends from time to time.

And as for the worms...blegh. Shivers. But I can feed those to my leo rather than get anywhere near the crickets. :)

IDK what the life cycle is like for those critters, but I know that when I kept frogs I almost never had to restock crickets because they kept reproducing. I figure that if possible, the worms might have made more worms in transit.

No, the worms have to grow up, spin cocoons, hatch out moths, mate, lay eggs, and hatch. So no. They're only in transit a day.

I've never actually counted a bag of 50 pinks...

Hmm, I love my little silkworms! They are cute, to me. They don't bite or smell.

The hornworms get gross when they get big. I have supers, too, for the toads. Now those are evil. But super easy to care for!

12 hornworms $10.98

100 medium silkworms and 1 pound wet food $19.98

I'm lazy and like to buy pre-made silkie food, but I have a couple packs of dry food around if I run out.

100 silkies without food is $10.98.

The price of silkies drops drastically as you go up in quantity, but that seems to be the right number for Isabel- by the time they are trying to spin coccoons and I only have a few left, I'm ready to order more, if I start with 100. With 200 I end up feeding some to the toads, who love them but who do fine on the much less expensive supers.

Same deal for crickets! At the shops I go to the pet store worker usually throws 15-20 ish Crickets in the bag when I ask for a dollar's worth (10 for a dollar). I need a few more Tarantulas so that I can actually use all those Cricks!

Unfortunately worms don't work for me, my Tarantulas don't eat them fast enough. At least one always ends up burrowed in the substrate, then I have the little flies in the cage for months.. :smash:

Well I was kinda hoping all my mice would be DOA's - esp. if I ordered them frozen!

But congrats on the lucky number of worms!

I tried to get my monitor to tear into some silk worms, he simply wasn't interested. He loves the crickets though!
