Fer-de-lance on the loose! Idiots

Remember the Jeff Corwin episode where he threw his shirt over a snake and then caught it and when it opened it's mouth it could have swallowed his whole face, that was a fer-de-lance. Way cool snake.

Dumb piece of crap... Who carries a HOT around in their freaking car?!? This is just more ammo against people who own exotics... grr..

Wow, I've been reading about those in this new gigantic snake book I got. The author has spent a lot of time with them. That is one willing to bite snake! I hope they locate it. I bet this doesn't end well for the snake...

I've encountered a few of those in Costa Rica on my various trips. I don't know if I would classify it as the most dangerous central american snake but it is definitely up there. I think I'd give the Bushmaster a little more room....

Other than the lack of a rattle, they are similar to eastern diamondbacks so I doubt anyone is really going to try to pick it up, but still what kind of senseless person keeps a hot in their car, let alone leaving it unattended in a walmart parking lot.

I hope no-one is hurt by the animal and that the animal doesn't lose it's life if found.

I think the Fer-de-lance is more often encountered and more aggressive than the Bushmaster. I wouldn't want to be surprised by either. Costa Rica has the Eyelash viper as well, what a great place!

See, this is where strict reptile laws come from. People who have no right having a venomous snake, being idiots. I guarantee that some strict laws will follow this event.

I think it might be doubtful that a person with a legally-permitted fer-de-lance would be A. Going to Walmart B. with a venomous snake in the car and C. have it so poorly contained as to allow it to escape.

So stricter laws won't prevent incidents like this.

And further inquiry proves me right:

Caller reports deadly snake missing

Police say they hope someone finds the snake. But call officials — don't try to catch it.

GLOUCESTER - — A man calling himself "sort of a reptile lover" sparked an areawide snake hunt Thursday, after he called a police tip line to report a deadly pit viper missing from his car.

The man, who didn't identify himself, told police he had been shopping at the Wal-Mart Supercenter when a box containing the highly venomous fer-de-lance was taken from his car. He didn't identify himself, and Gloucester sheriff's investigators have been unable to locate the snake or corroborate the caller's story.

"He said, 'Hey, I'm not going to identify myself because I'm probably not supposed to have this snake, but I'm sort of a reptile lover,'" Gloucester Sheriff's Maj. Darrell Warren said.

The call was placed to the Gloucester Sheriff's Office Crime Line, which promises anonymity and is therefore an untraceable phone line, said Maj. Tim Doss, Gloucester chief deputy.

State law doesn't prohibit keeping venomous snakes, said Julia Dixon, a spokeswoman for Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. All that's needed is a permit from the local animal control officer.

The fer-de-lance is a type of pit viper, native to South and Central America, known for its aggressiveness and the potency of its venom, Michael Wauhop said. He's a former herpetologist at the Virginia Zoo who now runs ZooPro Wildlife Removal in Virginia Beach.

"The fer-de-lance causes more deaths in South and Central America than any other snake, and the reason it does that is it's an ambush predator," he said. "If it's true, they've got a problem."

The brown or olive-colored snake has geometric shapes on its back and is usually between 4 and 6 feet long, he said.

If the snake escaped in the parking lot, Wauhop said, it likely would retreat to a shady area off the pavement to escape the heat. If somebody sees it, he said, "they need to get the hell away."

Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News keeps only antivenins for bites from Virginia's three native poisonous snakes, hospital spokesman Peter Glagola said. If someone was admitted to a Riverside hospital with a bite from a fer-de-lance, the hospital would need to have the antivenin shipped from a poison control center in South Florida — which would take about four hours, he said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the snake's whereabouts to call Gloucester's anonymous Crime Line at 804-693-COPS or the sheriff's office at 804-693-3890. They're offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to the snake's recovery.

So I wonder if the person who stole it knew what was in the box. If not, I bet he doesn't steal from cars again! But who knows, the whole "stolen snake" story could be a total lie, too.

No question on that one! On my trips to Costa Rica I encountered more Fer-de-lances (Bothrops asper) than any other snake!!! Most of them acted like cottonmouths.....lots of tail rattling and huffing and puffing but usually they wanted to get out of your way.

And yes...the eyelash vipers are cool....nothing like seeing them in their wild habitat! Only wish I could have found a high yellow or bright green one....I searched and searched and searched for them but all I ever got was the dark green ones....I might have been in the wrong area. :shrugs:

And don't forget the milks and boas of costa rica...great place....haven't been since 2002 and I NEED to get back there!

All that aside and back on the title topic, Fer-de-lances aren't all that common in the US. You don't see large numbers of them available and I agree with Nanci...this story could be made up. Although it could be true, the likelihood of someone having a fer-de-lance AND being stupid enough to put it in a box in a car may be a bit too much. Cobras and Rattlesnakes are a much more common venomous snake to have in the regular market. Then again....if you've got money....any stupid thing is possible!

Very funny... Jeff Corwin is cool IMO; I watch him everyday at 5... I just wish Animal Planet wasn't so cheesy with shows like "It's Me or the Dog" and crap.

Anyway, the guy WAS an idiot.. maybe not because he went to wal-mart with it in it's car but the fact that he let it escape AND called the cops.. Imagine the trouble he'll get into when they find the snake!

I think the odds of this snake is still alive is slim. The temps in VA right now are far below what a Tropical snake could survive.

Dumb piece of crap... Who carries a HOT around in their freaking car?!? This is just more ammo against people who own exotics... grr..

OMWord girl that was too funny!! :laugh01:
I wonder why he was at Wal-mart w/ a deadly snake in his car?
I know....he was buyin' a fish aquarium, pine shavings & a cocunut hide for his new pet...& was probably gonna run over to Petsmart to get a hamster. LOL j/k

Srsly though I hope it was a lie or they do find it dead. It does make it harder for those of us who don't take their snakes to Wal-mart.
