Fort Tort: March

Nanci

Alien Lover
So after a frustrating attempt to buy lumber for the new boxie enclosure (I finally had to leave or I was going to kill the child in charge of that section, on Sunday, and when I went back today a real person was happy to sell me $450 of stuff that wasn't there yet...) I drowned my sorrows in new plants.

The west burrow: (I dug out the frozen to death date palms- need something new to shade the entrance)

The east burrow: (caught Buttercup snacking on her new straw flowers this afternoon!)

The kids, out there, today:

I'm going to try rose bushes this year, for a change.

I think this tree is too damaged to trust- I am going to move it out of the pen:

Luckily, my beloved weeping mulberry survived the winter:

And so did one of my favorite grasses, the tiger grass:

This is the Chinese Fringe Tree, which is flowering like crazy. It lost its leaves so early last fall I thought it died!

That spy anole is too funny!
I agree, if I ever get a real backyard someday - I am hiring Nanci to be my landscaper!

It looks all brown and dead right now! Just wait a couple months!

I _think_ I have figured out how to do a pond for turtles who can't swim! It's going to be expensive, because I want to have a fountain or some sort of moving water in there. I gave up on a stream. But it'll have a solar fountain! Basically there will be a 4x2 foot reservoir, with a heavy duty grate in it, sitting on concrete blocks, with screen or weed cloth over that, with pebbles over that, allowing the turtles to get into water that is about two inches deep, with a low fountain in the middle, run by a solar pump. Then I will put slate or something around the edges. I'm going to have to use underlayment and pond liner. I'll do a progression thread on the whole project. The lumber gets delivered Saturday!

I can't wait to see it, Nanci. I love the whole concept of Fort Tort, but a water feature would be even better. I can only dream of the day I get a real house with space enough to create something like that.

Fort Tort looks great, Nanci! It must look super pretty in the spring when all the flowers look their best.

I would love to have your backyard.

Are you going to have to worry about mating at any point?

Great job with both projects.

I would do something like that if I didn't have 5 dogs with the run of the backyard.

I sure hope not. If the desert torts mate, I have to destroy the eggs. If the boxies mate, I can't have more than two, I can't sell them- I guess I'd have to destroy those eggs, too. I think I _could_ give babies away.

I'm hoping for two female tortoises- they are nearly five and I haven't seen any dominance issues from either one, but they are too young to visually tell what they are.

The boxies are for sure a male and female, and they do a lot of "cuddling."

I think I figured out how to fund the pond! We get that big tax rebate the beginning of May- perfect timing!

That's kinda sucky. It'll be hard to get eggs and have to destroy them.

:roflmao: We need a poll: "How many people plan to use their tax rebate for herp-related projects?"

Actually... that's not a bad idea...

How big will the eggs be? Do you think one of your Kings would eat them? No point in letting them go to waste. :shrugs:
