enclosure plan

Hi guys -
Was wondering if i could get some opinions on a plan I have for an enclosure to keep two snakes.

I just have an empty shelve and this would fit perfectly.

Basically is almost a normal viv divided in two.
Would have the appropiate air vents, sliding doors, heated by UTH's attached to thermostats.
It would also 350mm deep.

My only concern is - Do you guys think 220mm is high enough for a corn snake (or similar sized snake)? It doesn't look like much - but do they need the extra "head room"?

any feed back would be great - thanks in advance:)

I think that it is mostly the floor room that they need, because people who use racks, the tubs aren't very tall either?? I wish I had a thermostat :( but they are too expensive lol

I also thought that - but i'm not sure.

I wonder if the lower viv would add a sense of security for the snake ( just a thought though - its possible I'm looking for pro's cause i wanna go ahead with this. lol)

Corn's don't need climbing space, but it's certainly a great aspect of a viv' if you can provide it, as it gives them exercise and mental stimulation.

350mm deep isn't that deep... How long is each half going to be?

You're right about the floor space, and no, most of the tubs that breeders use aren't that tall.

Do you use a digital thermometer to check the temps?

900mm long

Think 220mm is to little?

uh, I'd say it's too small. Most sources will tell you 20 gallons long is the bare minimum, what you have there is 15 gallons for each snake with 3 square feet of floor space. Kind of cramped for an adult corn....

I don't know if corns need the room or not, but my guys use it. FinFang has been using is 18" tall space climbing like a monkey for the past week -_- something's gotten into him. I've caught Amel boy climbing around from time to time, but he is more of a hider most of the time.

*edit
oh ya, and what do you know about sliding glass doors? I'm thinking it might be an option for the shelf-vivs I want to make but I have *no* idea how to go about doing it. Do you just buy the tracks at a hardware store? Where do you even get glass like that?

Maybe I have the wrong measurements - but what I have says the floor on a 20g long is 762mm (30") long and 304.8mm (12") deep -

My design has floor space of 900mm long and 350mm deep - Thats more floor space than a 20g long.

I think thats correct but im not 100% sure - you may be correct that it is less gallons due to the height though. having doubts about making it now

well, I use this to calculate gallons:
http://www.firsttankguide.net/calculator.php

and of course area = length x width.

so you can check your measurements against what I came up with.

thanks V_Various - I just worked it out- it works out to 17.81 US gallons.

Now this is my last question - and the answer will decide if i build this or not.

Does the snake suffer without its 2 gallon volume that I'm taking away - or benifit from the extra floor space? or - basically, is that 2 gallons off the top a loss for the snake?

I don't think it would be such a big loss..I kind of figure snakes need more length then height...they like to stretch out more then climb..at least some do..I would go ahead with it but that's just me..

ya, but it's only 15 gallons? Most every source I've read say 20 gallons long is the *bare* minimum, and I have my guys in 33 gallons and think it looks cramped. Plus they both love the height and use it, but it probably depends on the snake.
