Ive Been Feading My Corn Frozen Pinkies Since Ive Had Him, He Weighs 22g Now, But I Want To Start Feading Him Live Mice. I Went To The Petshop Today To Ask, But They Said They Advise Against it As The Mouse Can Bite, The Snake And Cause Infections, Which I Realy Dont Want. Is There Any Methods Of Feeding Live Mice To my Snake, While Reducing The Chance Of The Mouse Bitting ??? Any Advice Is Apreciated, Thanks x

i think some ppl stun the mice before hand
i saw on youtube that this one guy ran (almost drowned) the mouse in a fish tank til it was pretty tired out and then fed it to the corn

i have never fed live tho

As long as you supervise and make sure the mouse doesn't harm the snake, feeding live should be fine. Don't ever put a mouse (or especially a rat!) in there with the snake and then walk away, unless they're frozen.

Oh, And Capitalizing Every Single Word You Type Seems Too Troublesome With No Actual Reason For Doing So, Don't You Think?

How come you decided to feed live mice? I think I'm going to try the opposite (F/T) with mine, she's been eating fresh killed.

Some people bash the mice... they either take them by the tail and bach them on a counter top (expect blood) or they put them in a paper or platic sack and do the same. You have to do it HARD though or it will just make it dizzy and not actually stun it. I personally only had to do this once and I don't ever want to do it again. The most humane way (and the only APPROVED way) to pre-kill mice is by creating a C02 chamber seen here: http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51834&highlight=chamber

Now this link is only to ONE method of C02-ing the mice, I'm know there are others and someone else can post those links (I'm headed to bed soon).

I won't feed my snakes frozen mice for was a mouse.... I could TOTALLY eat it (last option, of course yuk!)... but I could never, under ANY circumstances, EVER eat one of those nasty frozen ones. Maybe I got bad ones, but they were slimy and disgusting when thawed. Once I realized that I felt this way I decided "if I couldn't do it, then its cruel of me to expect my snakes to"... IMHO...

I can't eat things whole, but I'm not going to think it cruel if my snake chooses to do so :D

My snake eats frozen/thawed mice. When he tells me he doesn't like it, I'll switch ;)

As long as the animal will take f/t, there is no reason to feed live. If you can't find f/t, which I have no idea why you can't as there are loads of mouse suppliers available online, then you need to wack the mouse over the head or do cervical dislocation before feeding. I don't care how much you supervise, you'll never be able to stop a mouse or rat from biting a snake during the strike. You can't even stop a snake's strike, so how are you going to keep the mouse from biting if the snake doesn't catch it right? To think you can is rediculous. The only thing you can do by observing, is to make sure the snake doesn't get chewed on if it's not hungry. During the strike phase, all you will do is observe the snake lose an eye, nose or part of it's skin.

As you been advise.

Nope!

Yeah, so unless you are okay with bashing or cervical dislocation then you're right. The answer is no.

But then again I suppose cervical dislocation kills them so shouldn't be included in that.... and unless you bash them HARD then you won't kill them, just stun them, and your snake will do the rest... Sorry for the double post, I have't contributed (yet) so I can't edit ~_~.

Please do not feed live.
I had a snake get bit on the mouth. :crying: My daughter got bit very badly getting the mouse out. This caused another problem. He wouldn't eat at all. He was scared to death of even a dead mouse. I worked trying everything to get him to eat again. It is not worth the risk.

Why would you want to feed live? In this country, it's a grey area around legality, and can only actually be done if certain criteria are followed. You must be able to prove if challenged that it's the only way to keep your snake alive, you must do it in private, and also be able to prove you are not causing unnecessary suffering. There is a remote but real chance of prosecution otherwise.
With a snake voluntarily feeding on f/t mice and thriving, why fix what ain't broken?:shrugs:

That's pure torture! No living creature should endure such thing... :angry01:

Don't feed live! Period...

I agree. I forgot to respond to this comment, but I was horrified as well to learn that someone would torture the poor things that badly... Not to mention the FISH! I'm sure the mouse peed and wasn't entirely clean to begin with. That CAN'T be good for the fish...

that video was pretty graphic
the guy was a feeding a mouse that was way too big, then once the corn started eating it he had to get scissors out and cut half off so that it would all fit in the snakes belly
