Leucy-Black Rat/Texas Ratsnake

I need to pick your brains for a minute... :poke:

Can anyone fill me in on any differences (if there are any) between the
Leucistic Black Ratsnake
and the
Leucistic Texas Ratsnake

Any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks everyone,
-HoosierHerper

Wwll I have 3 black rats and my friend has a leucy texas. Texas rats tend to have mo aggresion as black rats are generally laid back as adults at least. Eye color differs as well as price. I hope this helps

LOL. I just PM'd you!!

Snakemaster gave some good info... I'll add what I know too.

LTR's, yes, are typically more defensive, esp. as younger snakes. However, as they get older, they can and do calm down. Some will say as much as "puppy-dog" tame... but I've never had an adult one.

Leucistic Black Rats... never had one, but have always WANTED one... I held one at a show last September (when I got my LTR) and it was like holding a corn snake. I didn't worry one bit about getting musked or bitten. VERY nice animal. IF, I hadn't wanted to replace a LTR that had passed away, I very well could have walked out with the Leucistic Black-Rat and have been just as happy (and possibly less bitten! LOL! - NOT A FACTOR FOR ME!).

As for eye color... the LTR's can come in either Red or Black/Blue. I've seen and asked about the leucisity/albinism of those with Red Eyes and have been assured that there is a difference in genetics if not appearance.

The Leucistic Black Rat snake that I held ALSO had bluish eyes... But I don't know if all of them do or not.

Check out the website I PM'd you. You'll see some great pics there.

Hope this helps!

Thanks a ton man, ya I just got and replied to your PM too...lol
Forgot to say in there, sorry about what happened a few years back...that would suck man...glad you stayed in the hobby though!

According to Don of SMR the leucy BLACK rats are all white with black eyes, and the leucy Texas rats are all white with blue-grey eyes. Mine is an 08 juvie LTR and certainly has lighter greyish eyes. I am hoping they will turn blue as she ages!

She has been a nippy little hatchling and would thrash, musk and chuck poo on her worst days. So I started handling her more with gloves and now at this point she seems okay even without the gloves.

I'd love a leucy black rat too... then again, my snake to-do list is longer than my longest snake.... lol!

Definitely puppy dog. My little fellow was a bit hissy as a juvenile but now? suffice to say that he received a shot and suffered the early stages of rectal prolapse(which means shoving the gut back into the vent) without so much as hissing.
If they are handled and gain your trust... heck, never had any cornsnake who could beat my LTR. Instead of being spooked to bits and moving all the time he is mellow, coils on your arm and stares curiously at the surrounding. If he feels adventurous he roams about relatively slowly.

IMHO they are one of the best colubrids, same body, bigger, and far more 'laxed.

I have an LBR, he's never offered to bite or strike, he's a little spastic (as far as wiggling to get away), his eyes are a light silvery grey. He's one of my fav's. I had originally wanted an LTR, but Jeff Mohr had this guy when I purchased my striped corn from him and decided to put him on the order, and I'm glad I did.

Either way both Leucistics are awesome. I would say the LTR's are probably a little more common. (don't quote me on that) Seems like more people on here have LTR's though. I also believe the LTR's are a little less expensive and tend to be a little smaller than LBR's.

Everyone really has it covered though.

As personalities go,
I really enjoy my Luecistic Texas Rat. He is puppy dog tame and extremely handible. Trust me, I know mean snakes and this guy isn't even close.

Now as the difference, I own Black Rats and Texas and there isnt much in care. Black Leucy's are a bit more priced and I do plan to buy a few this year for some breeding plans.
I have seen that Texas rats tend to get the bug eyed look but mine doesn't have that. I do not believe its in the Blacks.

But in my eyes the Black Rat you want are the more black ones.
This is a young snake that is very black and is getting blacker at every shed.

I remember, Jenne! I was one of the others going for him. LOL. I'm glad that you're happy with him! Do you have pics of him to post??? I'd love to see how he's developing. ;)

When you say, "little smaller," you mean the difference between an almost 7 foot LTR and an 8+ foot LBR, right? J/K. I know what you mean.

Those look great! I love looking at pics of your LTR. I'm hoping Luna gets as big and is as nice when she's that size. LOL.

I've wanted a Jet Black, Black Rat too... but that "want" has to be put on hold until I get a bigger house... which may be NEVER!!! :(

I think with all snakes, we tend to generalize... which isn't a bad thing... but we also have to account for each snake's "personality" and the way it had been handled before.

i think i'm in love with these snakes...yet another I must add to the list.
I know! When I first saw an LTR, I knew I'd have to have one!!!

Not meaning to hijack your thread, Josh... I just love these snakes and all talk about them as well. LOL.

No no, I was wanting all angles from all peoples on this topic...hijack away :) As long as it sticks to the general topic of LTR and LBRs I could care less!
Thanks again for all your info too!

And thanks to everyone else for your input!

Not to sound like a jerk, but I have seen your threads and your videos, and you are maybe the last one I am going to heed advice from. Thanks for your input though.
And please don't hijack my thread into a "my life sucks, my parents are divorced..." emotional suck-hole.
Thanks,

That is a legit site, I have actually wondered on it in the past...but I personally have come to the conclusion that I would rather trust what I have seen or read in these forums than I would trust the never-ending and CONFLICTING information found elsewhere.
Thanks again for your info though.
