Newbie Heating Question

I'm looking at Bean Farm and compiling a list of what I'll need for my cage.

I've also been reading the FAQs and searching the forums, but I haven't found exactly what I'm looking for, so I thought I'd ask. :)

I'm looking at using an UTH. I'm thinking of going with Flexwatt and getting the dimmer that is recommended for it.

If I'm using the dimmer, a digital thermometer with probe and a thermometer in the cage, is a thermostat necessary?

I see that Bean Farm has UTH called Ultratherm. It says these are self regulated and do not require a thermostat or a dimmer/rheostat. Are these good and is the claim true?

I've kept snakes in the past, about 10 years ago, and never used any of this stuff, just a light on top.:duck: I didn't have any problems, but I know more now and want to do it right and what's best for the snakes. I also want to budget conscious. :)

Thanks for your help!

Is this just for one tank? If so, you may want to skip on the flexwatt and just get a zoomed or zilla UTH with a thermostat or rheostat. You will definitely need one of them, as well as a good thermometer. The UTH's can get extremely hot and burn your snake.

Most of the stuff can be purchased from one of your local pet stores or petco. Do it that way and you can save on shipping. Not that the bean farm isn't good.

Good Luck,

Wayne

I'm actually planning on setting up 3 tanks. One for the juvenile snake I'll hopefully be getting in about a month and 2 smaller ones just in case something strikes my fancy at the Daytona show in August. :)

Good Luck at the Daytona show. Shows scare me, because I never have enough money. LOL!

Hmmmm, I am thinking about this. Flex-Watt may be less expensive, but I am trying to think about how you could do it. If you use FlexWatt, you will have to use a thermostat or rheostat. That stuff gets really hot. I still suggest you use a UTH. Unless you want to visit the DYI section of the site and build your own vivs. ;)

Good Luck and welcome to the forum!

Wayne

Yes, I figure the show will be tempting. :)

I am making my own viv. Right now I'm going to do this one because it's the easiest/least expensive. I will be buying a dimmer/rheostat with the Flex-Watt, I was just wondering if with that, would I need a thermostat as well, since I'll have a digital therm w/a probe and a therm in the cage.

Should I have posted this question in the DIY forum?

Thank you for the welcome and the responses. :)

You will not need a rheostat and thermostat together. They both do the same function, except one is manual and the other is done automatic. The only problem a rheostat is that you will have to continually monitor temps yourself and make the adjustments yourself. A thermostat will do this for you.

You might want more than 2 extra vivs if you're coming to Daytona. I was darn near flat broke, and STILL wound up coming home with a beautiful corn! :D

Thank you. :)

I use Ultratherm heat mats on all my vivs and I've found without a thermostat they do get too hot for corn snake temps, over 110*F, so a stat is definitely needed :)

I personally prefer a thermostat over a rheostat/dimmer, because if the ambient air temp changes you don't have to keep re-adjusting a thermostat, as it will just turn the mat on or off depending on if the air temp gets cooler or warmer, whereas you probably will have to make adjustments with a rheostat/dimmer.

Hope that helped and didn't confuse you :)

Edited to add; Wayne beat me to the post ;)

Having been to reptile shows in the past, I know how tempting it can be! However, I also know my limitations on how many I can care for right now. So 2 extra it will be. :)

Not if you're anywhere near Nanci. She'll have you buying things you didn't even know you wanted!

Definitely helpful. I've been getting great info on this site. Thank you. :)

Man, I hope not. lol My husband knows I want to get one next month and he knows I'm going to the show in August, but I don't think he wants to come home to too many snakes. :D
