My first BP eggs that are NOT just normal x pastel...

kathylove

Pragmatic & Logical
are starting to hatch today. This is pastel x pastel, which means I MIGHT get a super pastel - I like those a lot! And I will hopefully get more pastels than usual. One little head does look very faded out, so I am crossing my fingers! I have them setting out on the front porch so Bill can take some photos once the first one comes out, and all of the other heads are sticking out.

My next clutch (in a few weeks) will be citrus ghost x het citrus ghost, so I still have another chance to get something that is not a normal or pastel. That would make the season fun and interesting!

Keep your fingers crossed that I get at least one super (more would be nice, too!) I will post photos when they hatch.

2 are out - both normals!

BUMMER! 4 to go. I can see one is at least a pastel - can't tell if it is a super or not. Just have to wait, and try not to bother them TOO much!

OOOH, sounds exiting. I'm confused though, if it's Pastel x Pastel how are their Normals? I'm not familiar with BP genetics, so pardon me if it's a stupid question.

Pastel is a co-dom morph in BP world. So pastel x pastel should be 1/4 norm, 2/4 pastel and 1/4 Super Pastel. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on the chances.

It is easiest for a corn snake person to think of a pastel as a het for super pastel (which is really what it is). Since it happens to look like something other than normal, it is called a pastel. So just call a pastel a "het for super pastel", and you will understand it better.

God Kathy, why would a corn snake guru waste their time with ball pythons?! ;)

I cannot WAIT to see pics of your efforts. I am a big fan of baby pastels... I like the yellows. But Tara says they fade as adults and that I should look at super pastels. Course it's all window shopping right now. But when that house sells...

2 normals and a pastel so far...

I can see a lighter one in the egg yet...so I am hoping!

Yes, the pastels get "dirty" as they age, more than fading, I would say. Kind of like a lot of normal corns. But the supers, much less so. But I have a line of pastels from Gulf Coast reptiles that seem brighter than most I have seen. So I am hoping a super from that line will be REALLY super!

I have an '07 female that has kept her color quite well, and is about big enough to breed right now. So I hope she will go this year, bred back to her dad. The breeding I did from that GCR male this year is with an unrelated female that is a bit "dirty", but still pretty. It is her first year, so I don't know what she is capable of.

Thanks for the explanation Kathy and Corn/Snake! I hope you get the Super Pastel you're hoping for, as I agree that it would be nice if they kept their rich yellow color.

Most are out now - one still in the egg, but I can see it pretty well.

I am guessing that they are 2 normals, 2 pastels, and 2 supers. But it is a little difficult to tell, just like hypo corns and light normals. I think the faded head means "super", but they are only a little lighter than the pastels. Will try to photo them tomorrow when they are all out and dried off, and see what they really look like.

Here they are...

Note the faded heads of two of them. I believe that is a mark of a super pastel. I will be posting them on a ball python forum, too, to see what the BP people think.
