Text speak

snakewispera snr

The Devils Advocate
I find I am missing a lot of the gist in threads when text speak is used.
I can wok it out if I take my time, but I can't be bothered to try...
How many of you find you skim over threads when the txt ppl strt
.. LOL
Can we have a sub forum for these people.....:nyah:

When taking notes in class, I write everything with the least amount of vowels possible. So, text speak really doesn't bother me that much. It's obviously not the most pleasant to read, but I get the gist of it.

I'm sorry but that part made me chuckle.
Actually if I have to have a decoder ring to read a post I just close that thread and don't go back to it.
That's my point.... I close threads and then think, 'what if they needed help, and text speak is all they know'
Robbie is a grammer nazi... Perhaps we could employ him to patrol the site....
And actually I could see jack boots and a nice peaked cap suiting Robbie....

Well if they actually needed help. I'm sure they could structure a sentence more coherently then using text speak. Lets face it if they had to write a paper for school or for a project at work, they certainly wouldn't be using text spelling now would they?

I close those threads too. If someone wants to be taken seriously (srsly!) they can write like a normal person.

LOL.. I text a LOT!!! Quite a bit, actually. BUT, I don't use text speak. I've got one of those phones with a keyboard and I type out whole words every time. The only words that I don't type out are "LOL", "ROFLOL", "DYK", "IDK" and "plse". I'm just pretty retentive about most conventions.

Is it really considered "text speak" anymore? With full keyboards and T9, neither myself, nor friends, send abbreviated words. My phone even has spell check that adds punctuation, and automatically changes the misspelled word to the correct one... So let's call it what it is, laziness....

There ARE places for those people.....twitter (and the legion of twitter-like places), grade school, playgrounds, and video arcades.
None of which I frequent.

In fact, frequent and habitual misspelling and poor grammar are a major turn off for me. In screen names, in new postings, in 'academic' conversations, or even pillow-talk. Bad grammar has been a relationship killer for me. Ruins a romance. Seriously.

Incidentally, anytime Robbie wants to take a vacation, I'll take over.
In fact, he and I have discussed our mutual pet peeves for txt-spk, and even when Robbie and I text back and forth on the phone, we text in grown-up talk. Imagine that, adults speaking and texting like adults.

Incidentally, Josh, in medical school they teach a way of taking notes very fast by leaving out almost all vowels. It does come in handy in the context of fast and voluminous lectures in medical school. (I went for two years, before I decided I hated it enough to take a sabbatical, choosing a year later to never return.) In that needful context, time and abbreviation were of the essence.

the only acronym i use is lol just because sometimes differentiating between seriousness or sarcasm can be tough on forums

that and stream of consciousness typers who dont use punctuation or brakes of any sort they usually dont have good grammer or speling neither they must think well automatclly fix things and put them in for them their rilly annoying and

Sorry, I can't even continue - too much effort!

I'd be happy to help Robbie out, and be the Special Adjunct Grammar Nazi Extraordinaire!

i couldn't give a damn about punctuation or capitilization on a forum. in a paper or a professional report obviously it's needed, but in a forum i don't care

Nice phone! On the laziness, my phone does not have or do any of these things and I still use complete sentences and words. It's how I speak, so it's how I write. Unless I'm goofing around.
